Do you have to be from USA to race in US National Championships?

I see that Jon Olsson (Sweden) and Leif Haugen (Norway) are racing in the nationals at Whiteface. Haugen just raced at the Olympics for Norway. How does he qualify for the U.S. nationals?

To be eligible for FIS points, races have to leave open a certain number of spots for international entrants. This is why "closed" races like the NCAA championships are not FIS races.

Anyone notice who won the NorAm GS title ???

Jon Olson, freeskier extraordinaire.

Whiteroom- you had better check your stats again... The NORAM GS title was won by Jon Olsson of Sweden, not the poser who thought he could slide back onto the USST.

Jon was a talented racer in his junior years before he started his freeskier career. A few years ago he made a bet with a guy in the Swedish national team that he will make it to the 2012 olympic team. Seems it will not be impossible. Jon must be one of the most complete skiers around.

That's 2014, not 2012 - no Winter Games in 2012.  That said, he should have a provisional start on the World Cup next season, and will almost certainly race some Europa Cup and FIS-B in the EU if he's interested in staying with alpine racing for a while longer.

Leif Kristian Haugen is on an NCAA sports scholarship, so I imagine he's eligible for NCAA champs too. In fact:

After a big celebration in steamboat after winning the NCAA Championship, me and my roommate Andreas headed out east for Nor-am finals and US Nationals.

I also know that he had to renounce his WC prize money recently due to his scholarship status - wasn't even allowed to give the prize money to charity.

He's from just down the road from me, y'know :D

There is a Canadian quota to US nationals and there is a quota for other nations to participate. There is also a college quota to nationals. The NCAA has very strict rules about prize money and no they don't allow the money to go to charity. You don't have to be an American to participate in NCAA nationals although it is a USSA sanctioned race and seeded by USSA points.
