Second message:

ERROR [SolrException] (1)
Sorry, the search service is currently unavailable
If you report this error, please include the following timestamp: 1269044483.3531

Waited and tried again... still not working. New time stamp: 1269044717.9626

Seems to be working now.

Thanks for posting the error!  We have a 0.25% failure rate on search (so 20 searches out of 8 thousand fail) which we're working on reducing.  Usually hard refreshing the page should take care of the issue but we definitely want to get that number as close to 0.0% as possible.

Missing results now.

For the following search:

http://www.epicski.com/search.php?advanced=1&action=disp&search=montana&titleonly=0&byuser=&output=posts&replycompare=gt&numupdates=0&sdate=14d&newer=1&sort=relevance&order=descending&Search=

Did not get:

http://www.epicski.com/forum/thread/93660/who-s-the-dumb-ass-who-dreamed-up-ski-season-dates/30#post_1214938

It had been posted an hour before and contained the word "Montana".  I tried re-doing the search with the word capitalized from scratch in the Advanced Search page and it still didn't come up.

Days later and that post is STILL not appearing in the search for some reason.....  Others are.
We fully reindexed the site on April 8th so things should be looking better.  It appears the "Who's the dumb ass who dreamed up ski season dates" thread is now appearing in the search you provided.

Thanks.  I've been gone for a week, just got back.

Guess what, now that search is not pulling up this post or any of the several after it in the thread, numbers 15, 20, and 21, although it did catch number 14 for some mysterious reason.

 search = massively broken

For a long time.

I routinely get spurious results. Search is lacking basic functionality. It is buggy. I keep being surprised that there is release after release without recognizing how important having reasonable search functionality is. Even vbulletin's search, marginal as it is, is vastly superior. If there is any single thing that would make this site better, it would be addressing this.

However you guys arrived at the "failure" metric cited above -- it does not reflect the reality of the many "advanced" searches that return junk, miss posts & threads they should hit, etc. Nor the fact that quick searches often return irrelevant ancient stuff...

Heck, I never use the "quick" search.  Totally totally totally useless.  Why would I want something from 2003?  I'm sure that's why we have so many ancient threads being resuscitated.

The team is currently working on making some huge improvements to the search functionality.  You're definitely right, having results appear from years ago isn't great.  Recency will play a much bigger roll in the ranking of search results and we should hopefully have those updates out to you in the next few weeks.  Thanks for your patience.

More bugs on the advanced search.  I tried to ask it to only search in certain forums and used the control key to highlight the ones I wanted to search.  In spite of this, it returned results from all the other forums.

A couple of thoughts:

1) Look at the search functionality of the more established systems. What is there is usually there for a reason. Having their baseline functionality would be a good thing. Fixing their limitations would be better (index down to at least 2 characters, maybe better stop words, etc)

2) Either ask openly what people want out of search that they are not getting, or maybe really study your query logs (assuming you have them & they are complete enough & not warped by the existing deficiencies ). That might give you a better idea of what to make easiest (or default). It may also help you assess what things to blend into your default results sorting. I think it is pretty clear that what you guys assume the community wants from search may not be what the community wants from search.

OK - I guess I lied about "a couple". Here's a 3rd: Ignoring for the moment the limited semantics of your "reviews" and wiki stuff - the fact that your default search results incorporates a range of result "types" probably means you need to limit search more (for example, start with results only from the "place" someone is at (without ending up being modal), or hybridize search and browse to eliminate the annoyance of having tons of stuff you really, really do not care about (eg wikis when looking for posts).

Of course, I'll gladly settle for a correctly working clone of vbulletin's search...

there needs to be a way to search phrases. I tried to search using basic and advanced search and the phrase "going south" brings up everything that has "going" and "south" .

If I tell it to search titles only I still get a huge number of hits none of which are what I'm looking for.

The one I was looking for is http://www.epicski.com/forum/thread/94207/going-south

which you would think should come up early on the list or in the Wiki's where it also is posted.

This search function needs updating...

Search function doesn't seem to pick up any results after 4/23ish right now.  For example, I did:

Keyword: volkl
Narrow Results: Posts Only
Sort Results by: Last Posting Date
All other criteria left at default selection.

When I run this search the newest result I get is a post from 4/21/10 in the thread titled "Concern buying skis online".  However there have been numerous posts since 4/21 with Volkl in the body... this thread: http://www.epicski.com/forum/thread/94259/10-11-predictions-winners-losers#post_1220544, this one: http://www.epicski.com/forum/thread/94325/and-mancuso-volkl#post_1221713, I'm sure many more... but none of the linked ones show up in my results.

Tried this with simple terms such as "snow" and same results, newest post I seem to get is 4/23 or so.  Don't think it's my pc either as I got the same results on a different pc and connection all together.

What is the story with this problem?  How soon should a word get picked up by the indexing system for searching?  Just tried to do a search on something I'd posted like a half hour ago and it didn't find the post.

Search is still fully broken. I rarely get an advanced search result set that makes any sense given what I know of the indexed underlying threads/posts.

There are many housekeeping things that should be done at some point, but the lack of working search functionality is a daily frustration.

Yeah, that post is still not being picked up, 1 hour and 47 minutes later.
