TR: Vail closing week and a TRIP REPORT from the last day - Page 3post #61 of 1554/16/10 at 7:19pmMEfree30 - PM sent.
Gear mentioned in this thread:post #62 of 1554/17/10 at 5:05pmVail Saturday- Word is that UL said it couldn't be done, but we were pretty successful at keeping a group of 15 together for most of the day without excessive waiting!!! Strong skiing by all.
Thanks to all the Bears for a great day- sorry Noodler & I couldn't hang around for a beer or two. Special thanks to VSP (Ric) for his fine group leadership (and tixs for those without passes)- I sure hope he didn't pay for any beers!post #63 of 1554/18/10 at 6:46am
It was an impressive group of 15 skiers who gathered to celebrate Vail's closing weekend!
In front- Finndog, CoSkiGirl, SKIRA, Segbrown, Betsy
In Back- CGEIB, BushwackerinPA, Eric, Noodler, Phil Pug, Mefree30, Bob Barnes, Don Denver, Paul, and VSP
The weather was a very mixed bag, from HUGE snowflakes in the am to some blue skies and heat in the pm. Everything inbetween seemed to exist. The snow ranged from several inches of creamy new fallen, to some pretty manky, sticky stuff by the pm. But the gang didn't seem to mind! We just kept charging all over the mtn- from the front side, to Sun Up Bowl, to several runs in BSB (In the Wuides, Iron Mask, Little Ollies). Then back to the front side for a few bumpers and some lunch, followed by more bumpers (Prima /Pronto).
Some of the various conversations overheard were fashion (Segbrown and Coskigirl), equipment (PhilPug and everyone), technique (Finndog and himself), but mostly how much fun everyone was having!
The ski day was curtailed right at the end by a combination of fatigue and lightning, wihich closed the lifts at about 3pm.
So we adjourned to the Tavern for a few adult beverages, but unfortunately Noodler and Mefree30 had to get back to Denver, while Bushwacker and Eric were SLC bound. Drinks were followed by 10 of us having dinner at The Gas House, a local favorite in Edwards, where the surf and turf and buffalo burgers seemed to be the overwhelming favorites!

If ever the phrase "A good time was had by all" was appropriate, this was certainly one of those times. It was a pleasure to meet several new bears and get make a few turns with a few old ones too!post #64 of 1554/18/10 at 7:09amWhat a fantastic day of skiing yesterday! I am still impressed by the ability of the large group to stay together and have a great time. Already looking forward to days next season!post #65 of 1554/18/10 at 7:14amSupremely stoked to see such a grand gathering. Some of my favorite ripping ski buddies squeezed into one photo, along with several Bears who I'm still hoping to meet. Not quite as good as being there, but a great second-best. Three thumbs up.post #66 of 1554/18/10 at 7:20amI have a ton o'pics to post but I didn't bring my cable nor a card reader. I will post pics when i get home.
This is one of the best last days of the year that I have ever experienced. We had a group of 15 great skiers and while we thought it might have been like herding cats, it was nothing of the sort, everyone hung together and there want even a moment where there was a concern with either loosing anyone or anyone not keeping up. Ric did a job second to none of showing us around the mountain, I can't say enough on what a great job he did. It was great finally skiing with people that I haven't skied with before and to hook up with a bunch of old friends that I love to ski with.post #67 of 1554/18/10 at 7:52amWhat a happy picture of some of my favourite Bears.....I sooooo wish I were there instead of stuck in Midwest spring mud

15 bears, many I had not met. It was great to finally match up the faces and get to know a bunch more bears. Had to imagine but as Phil said, 15 people all skiing together and all skiing in unison. Much thanks to Ric as guide extrodinaire and all around Mayor of Vail.
Here's a bunch of Pics-
matt on the cornice of Iron Mask, Matt showing what happens when sunblock gets onto your jacket.
Nice pic of Phil- Breakfast of champions- bourbon, coffee and day old pizza...
Technique? Geeze all I did was to ask Barnes about "frowardagonal skiing" and he starts thowing sowballs.....
bunch of other action shots.

As others have noted, I don't think I've ever before skied with a group of this size that all skied so well, and that could all stay together all day with no effort, and that was actually safe skiing in close proximity! Through rain, snow, fog, and sunshine, and all kinds of snow conditions (both kinds: some good, lots "good for you"!) I never heard a single complaint. It was an excellent day. Thanks to all for the good turns and the good times!Quote:Er, Finndog...those were SNOWballs. That other kind are exceedingly rare.
Bobpost #71 of 1554/18/10 at 11:19amWhat can I add but WOW - the best closing day in my life! Why? 15 for the price of one (I had only previously skied w/ Finndog and was invited up by him for the day without knowing that I'd be meeting and skiing with such a great group of skiers/folks...and no whiners!) Thanks tourguide VSP, nudger Finndog, "I'll take a **bleep**" Philpug, and here's to hopefully skiing with you guys again!
VSP - thinking of incorporating some kind of Euell Gibbons tribute into my tag line or profile, so thanks for educating me on something that how I slept through I don't know....

Bob, yeah Sow balls are very, very rare.... I don't think you were throwing those.....post #76 of 1554/18/10 at 7:16pmFor me it was the culmination of a many year quest to finally meet and ski with VSP. Some of you may know that Ric provided much needed support and guidance to me after my skiing accident back a few years ago. We exchanged many PMs and phone calls, but up until this point we just never were able to get our schedules aligned. I was very happy to finally get to me him in person and ski with him on his "home court".
It was also great to ski again with so many Bears that I hadn't been able to hook up with in the past couple years and to meet some Bears that I had been hoping to ski with for some time.
I love how this whole thing just sorta came together. If we had tried to actually plan it to turn out this way it probably would have failed. Maybe this is the start of some kind of end-of-season mini-gathering that we can keep rolling for a few years. Thanks to all for a great time.post #77 of 1554/19/10 at 5:54amQuote:

not to worry- had good times both days and most of the sunblock came out after the 2nd wash. Hope to catch you and/or Ira out at the Boat next year (I'll probably be meeting a friend ~late Jan) or over here in Summit.post #80 of 1554/19/10 at 9:52ampost #81 of 1554/19/10 at 2:10pm
From an Encyclopedia worth of experience; this is certainly a standout entry:

And I did not think it was possible to have a group this size be more enjoyable to a person or could actually all ski together at a pace that made the variable conditions we experienced seem like champagne powder on a bluebird day:
I know when a gold standard is set with such a posse as there was not a single incident, complaint or ego mucking it all up. Nothing but enthusiasm with everyone hoping the other had an even better run
I also know the saying “there are no friends on a powder day” is a specious bunch of crap. Skiing and sharing turns with friends is the experience regardless of snow depth…and our large group exampled that. So much so I noticed one guy sadly without anyone to share the day try to orbit our posse to experience the ripping skiing, laughter and energy coming from our group. Yup, it was that obvious as brother did we ever have large fast fun at Vail...
I would suggest to Uncle Louie that for the next gathering the names above can ski as one group, on any mountain on any day.
And for vail snopro; thank you for such a great MC role and all the hospitality you provided at your mountain. You made sure it was truly a one of a kind day skiing with friends
Hopefully Phil will have some additional photographs to add to Finn's and VSP's fine takes...great memories until the group forms up again next season.post #82 of 1554/19/10 at 2:25pmQuote:
We would have enjoyed your company TC
Since some had to get back home after skiing as well as BWPA and Eric needed to drive to SLC, we celebrated a little harder while missing their voices. I have a feeling that our large tip did not make up for some heat the restaurant owners may have gotten from other patrons tired of hearing us laugh. No, really, I echo everything that has been said (except for the champagne powder part), and look forward to more days of LAUGHTER in the future. And maybe we could even ski some, too.post #88 of 1554/19/10 at 5:37pmQuote:
Don't do it, Phil! Your reputation will never be the same! (Trust me, I was there and saw the WHOLE thing!)
BTW- numbers are in. Vail did almost 17,000 skiers/riders on closing day! Largest closing day in Vail history! All of us locals couldn't help but comment on the numbers, the costumes, and the general feeling of merriment!
At the same time, there were estimated to be 4000 at the 4 at 4 party at the top of Chr4, over 3000 watching the Pond Scumming ,er skimming, and another 2000+ watching the concert. All of these were going on at the same time.
As I drove home at about 7:30pm, the sun was still shining and skiers were still coming off the hill, and reports from friends on Ski Patrol told of some people still leaving the hill at 2:30am..... All of this may sound like loads of fun, but I now expect Vail Resorts and the USFS to lower the boom and seriously restrict next season's closing day parties. Just like they did the the Mtn Formal and the BB+B.post #89 of 1554/19/10 at 5:51pmOriginally posted by Don Denver-

WOW! And I thought Bazzer had the ultimate gift of prose... hahaha Somehow, I don't ever remember the phrase "champagne powder" entering my thoughts as we skied some of that muck! In fact, given that this is a family site, I won't even mention a few of the more choice terms I was thinking I'd use to describe some of the snow we skied!
And to all of the kind comments made, thank you, but all I did was point the way- you guys/gals did the skiing! Definitely one of the most enjoyable groups of Bears I have ever skied with!post #90 of 1554/19/10 at 5:58pmQuote:
