TR: Keystone 3.12.10

Traffic diverted us to Keystone instead of Breck.  A short hike was rewarded with some great tree skiing in the Outback.  It turned out to be a great day.

(I had a little fun with Photoshop and put together a panorama of Loveland Pass.  It looks pretty sketchy.  If you look close you can see the slide debris underneath the large cornice.)

Nice report, ScaryFast. It took us a while to get some decent snow here in Summit County, but as your photos show, it's finally getting good! Glad you had a good day at Keystone!

(And you've reminded me again--that sign in the Outback clearly needs some EpicSki stickers!)

Best regards,
Bob

Look in the second pic, SkiKing--an enlargement of the cornice with the slide.

As most people probably know, the back country snow conditions in this area are quite unstable. We had an avalanche death near Keystone this week, and in general, with the recent new snows (with a fair amount of wind) on top of the season's scant base, things are sliding all over the place. Arapahoe Basin's patrol has been busy with the explosives on the East Wall, causing many large slides. For The Basin, these slides are actually important to fill in the rocky zone below the East Wall so they might be able to open it for skiing before the season is over.

Use care out there!

Best regards,
Bob
