Question about Head race ski models

Thread Starter
EDIT: My questions have been answered. Thanks.

I've seen various models of Head race skis and am a bit confused. Many places (including the Head web site) only list iSL and iSpeed. I've seen iGS and iSG, which are apparently made to comply with FIS requirements (the iSpeed does not meet the requirements for GS). I've also noticed that some are listed as RD and others aren't. I have demoed Head skis and love them, and I want to buy a pair, but would like a few things clarified first. My questions are:
-How can I purchase the skis that meet USSA and FIS requirements?
-What is the difference between RD and non-RD, and which is better? Do both meet USSA/FIS requirements?
-Are there RD and non-RD versions of GS, SG, and DH skis, or only SL?
-Are there any other models besides RD and non-RD?
-Is there anything else I should know about various models of Head race skis?

Any information is very much appreciated. Thanks.

On a totally unrelated note, do you know if ski waxes are vegan?

(Just curious.)

Some may not be but I know that Swix is made using plants and I use Swix. Do you happen to have any information on Head skis?

Sorry, no.  A Dynastar guy myself, and not a racer.  Why not try the Racing (and Big Mountain Comp) forum?

Can I have a link? Thanks.

RD means "race department" Those are the FIS legal skis. DH and SG skis are all race department only. RD GS and RD SL are the FIS legal skis for those disciplines. All RD skis are FIS spec skis.

You can purchase Head RD skis from our store either in person or by phone. We carry all sizes in SL and GS as well as SG and DH. (some sizes in speed skis have been sold out however) We also carry the 18 DIN Race dept bindings and the RD boots in 130 and 150 flex. If you have an active and current USSA number, you can get them at "race form" pricing.

One further answer.

Difference between iSL RD and iSL.

Biggest difference is the plate.  The RD version uses the race plate which is in two parts.  With the race plate the end toward the mid of ski is fixed and the outer ends slide on the ski to allow better ski flex.  The iSL non RD version uses the Speed Plate which is also used on the iSpeed and Supershape skis.  There is also a different topsheet on the two skis but that is mostly cosmetic.

From a skiers perspective both are really nice skis.  The RD version feels a bit stiffer and has more noticable kick out of the turns.

I have skied both versions in a 165cm over the past couple of weeks.  They are really fun to ski.

Usually the iSL RD, iGS, iSG, iDH are special ordered from shops.

Thanks for the information!  I have conflicting responses on GS skis--are they only available as RD, or also non RD?
