I'm hoping to go visit my brother out in Cali between now and the end of april. I'm workin on gettin some skiing in, it looks like if i do make it out there we will be hitting kirkwood. My question, is the skiing worth it at the end of april? His birthday is around then i would love to be out there for it considering its his 21st. Of course if the skiing isn't worth it ill head out while theres still some cover. thoughts?

Better than not skiing at all.

But plan on three hours of decent conditions-that window between ice and slush.

Cover should be good.

Yes. If your ski is wide and freshly waxed.

Plus if you're wearing shorts.

I have seen some epic snowstorms hit in mid and late april, and well after the closing in May.  I have skied Carson Pass in June and had great conditions.   Kirkwood is the highest altitude ski area (base) in the Tahoe region, and could go for a much longer year, but for the lack of business and limits on their Forest Service use permit.    There will be lots of snow, and it could vary between wet or fresh powder.  There will be no crowds other than the Long-Board Day crew ripping up their last runs before hiking.

FYI  in late April comming from the Bay area I would go To Squaw Valley.  The pool and Jacuzzi at 8200 Feet is fun as hell on a sunny Day.  + they also have the snow.  just Sayin

Hey, no fair starting halfway up the mountain.

I have skied down from High Camp in May, and its kinda sketchy.

But you are right, the upper mtn is good for a long time

Anyway, end of April is not a problem for Kirkwood snow.  It lasts long after they close.

squaw will definitely still be open.  so won't mammoth.  as far as spring skiing and quality corn is concerned, it would be hard to beat either of those options.

if you think there's only a couple good hours a day of corn, then you're doing it wrong.  i've never been able to figure out why nobody moves on to north facing slopes once the south faces get cooked.... i ski til last chair every day in april and may and never have a problem finding amazing snow.  april is my favorite month to ski.

as much as people brag about the high elevation of other resorts, squaw totally benefits from its lower base.  in april and may you can expect the temperatures to be inverted just about every day.  this means that the snow at lower elevations stays firm longer and becomes incredible in the afternoon.  you ski the upper mountain in the morning and when it gets sticky you head down to KT.  i think squaw's elevation is perfect!
