Skis for son

Need advice for skis for son. Shops seem to advise based on what they are selling, and I want to get the right ski. He is 11 yrs old, 5' 2", 105lbs. He wants twin tips to start park and gladevriding, but will still be 70% groomed trail skiing. Sizes recommended have ranged from 148 - 160 (seems too wide a range). Skis recommended have included K2 Silencer, K2 EXT, Line Mastermind, Volkl Ledge, Dynastar Trouble, Nordica Dead Money. Any help would be great. I don't want to put him in a ski that will be "too much" for him to enjoy, but also want a ski he can grow a little with. Thx

The Silencer  is an OK all- around ski.  Good in the park, not great in the powder, good on groomed.  A friend of mine has masterminds... they seem like they have a TON of pop for the park, and are great in moguls and glades.  Not sure about groomed terrain.  My son who is 5' 4" advanced skier has K2 public enemys ( Now called the extreme) and he loves them.  Great ski all around.  He has them in 164 which may be a little short for him next year.  The EXT is the kids version of that ski I think.

EXT is NOT a kids ski.  It is an 80mm waisted version of the Extreme.

mid 150cm would be a good length. many companies makes good mid-fat (around 80mm) skis that are not overly stiff. park skis and "glade-riding" (off piste fresh snow?) skis are not the same performance characteristics, pop for the park, damp for the off piste, opposites.  re: stifness, he should be able to stand on the snow in his skis and bend them a little by leaning hard forward or back. have fun.

Thanks for input. So is it fair to say 148 too short and 159 too long? I know some models avail in 155-157. Should that be the target?

My son just turned 13 and is about the same size as your (maybe an inch taller and 5 lbs heavier)  We got him Fischer Addict Pro Team junior skis in 151cm and he loves them.  He wanted twin tips for his new skis.  The are 78 cm underfoot.  He spends most of his time out of the park.  These skis worked fine in the light fluffy powder of Steamboat over Christmas and he has had them in the moguls, glades, etc., no problem.

Would the EXT be an appropriate choice for 12 yr old 105lb 5'2" kid that skis exclusively in Northeast (packed pow, groomed, frozen ganular stuff)?  Again, I want it to be an all around ski, not just park & pipe.

Also if he is venturing into park for first time is shorter better?

I think that would be a perfect ski.  If he is not going to be in the park most of the time,  it is not worth it to go shorter.  Shorter skis will make it easier to learn new tricks, but he probably won't get as many seasons because he wont have as much length to grow into.  If he is not a serious park skier, I think you should just get him a normal size.  I would say 150-160 is ok.  The 80mm waist is fine for our eastern conditions.

Thanks for replies.  I think I am going to go with K2 Silencer @ 149cm.  I fear the EXT is too stiff for him at his weight and might be a better choice as his next ski after Silencer.  Also, with him being newer to park, I think going a little shorter might help.  If anyone thinks I am making a horrible mistake, let me know.  Thanks

Well ok choice for the ski, but also twin tips ski about 5 cm shorter.  I think 149 is too short, but you can get what you want.
