Can't figure out how to edit, but to add to the above-preferably a place with good demo options so I don't have to lug my gear around on business trip.

Drive an extra 2 hours and go to the southern vt resorts, ie stratton killington okemo. Worth the drive. I have never been impressed with any of the ny resorts, they are crowded and do not ofeer much terrain. The poconos mtns are not even skiing, it is glorified sledding. You can still have fun at camelback in pa, but realize you are going to be spending about double as long on the lift line as you are on the run

At your level, it would have been great at Plattekill last week. It's not like any of the nearby ski areas.

2 hours from Newark - some mini places in NJ - I think one is called Thunder Ridge. But if you are willing to drive another 30mins (giving you margin.) or so, Windham and Hunter mountain are pretty big for this part of the country. Long before Vermont - but your drive gets longer, Catamount/Butternut or Jiminy Peak (in my view way better than Windham or the others) but thats SE corner of Massachusetts and from Neward at 3.5 hr drive, Vermont way further up - add a minimum of 2 hrs.

Yout could try Mountain Creek or Hidden Valley in NW NJ (about 1 hour 20 minutes from EWR) or Camelback in the Poconos (maybe a little bit longer drive).  I would do the Catskills though....Hunter/Windham/Bellayere.  2 hours and a bigger mountain experience.

Hunter is about 2 1/2 hours if you need a selection of demos. If it's not the weekend, it won't be crowded.

Plattekill is only open Fridays thru Sunday. It wont be crowded, ever. No real demo center, but you'll pass by Potter Bros ski shop on your way and should be able to pick up something decent. They also have discount lift tickets.

Both just got 6-7 feet last week so plenty of snow, for now. I was at both (as well as Bellaeyre) this past week. Great conditions, though I'm sure it will be groomed by now.

Thanks for the responses.  Having taken these suggestions and done some looking, I have now expanded to 5 hour drive as my travel is somewhat flexible.  I decided this after seeing how easy I could get a better hill if I would drive a little more.  At first I was thinking maybe Okemo, then Mount Snow based on distance and good ski and stay deal at Red Mill Inn, but then I thought what the heck--I should just drive on up to Killington.  Always wanted to ski there, shouldn't be crowded on a Wed. good demo selection.  Now that I have expanded to anything within 5 hour drive of Newark, any advice on which hill to go to in South to Central VT?
