A-Basin, Late April/Early May

My buddy and I are trying to make another trip out west--we spent 6 days in Vail & Steamboat back in January--and are wondering if the conditions at Arapahoe Basin that time of year would be worth the trip out?  We can't really match weeks off from work until then, and I know Arapahoe consistently stays open late into the season, but I just want to see if it's worth booking the plane tickets.

Thanks!

Just wanted to bump this and see if anyone has any experience with the conditions at Arapahoe later in the season.

In a normal year late April still has lots of snow at the basin. You could probably count on the entire frontside still being open. After the fatal slide a few years ago on Pali that would probably be closed by then. The backside would probably be closed by then as well.

This however has not been a normal year for the basin. Mid-April is usually the peak snowpack but everything is so thin this year it's hard to predict.  It really depends on how many spring storms we get. I've skied 17" new on May 11 so anything is possible.

Ok, thanks.  Maybe I'll hold off on the tickets for now.  I just got back into skiing this year and I don't want to let the season go!

I was thinking of Abasin for Mothers Day like we've been doing for the past three years, but the cover this year leaves me thinking that it may not be possible.
According to the Abasin "runs open" there are many parts of Montezuma bowl that aren't open yet, which is very scary,eh?

I haven't been up there to ski in a while.  Drove by last Sunday and the lower front looked pretty good.  That said south facing sloped in the area are basically bare. Reports from the backside were pretty grim. It's all going to depend on what happens between now and then.

Last year things were looking thin at this point, too, but then they got hammered early April. Still plenty of time! Last year, almost everything was still open over mothers' day weekend, including the east wall and pali. I think just some of the hardest stuff in montezuma was closed.

If there is any chance of making this happen, I'll do it, after all I am feeling the need for a Weems hug!

Although Pali was open last year when we were there at Mothers Day, they closed it the next weekend.  I guess they want to make sure not to keep it open too long lest it slide again.  I did hear it already slid once this year (before they opened it for the season)

Not sure about the rest of the Philly crew - but lovebug and I are still planning on coming out to A-Basin around that timeframe.

We skied A-Basin three weeks ago.  At that time conditions were the worst I've ever seen for this time of year. The front side was basically only ~70% open, and the back side and upper east face was not open at all.  Most of the storms have been passing A-Basin by.  However, March is typically our snowiest month, so stay tuned.  In a typical year A-Basin closes the second week of June (they haven't made it to July 4 in over a decade, though they could have the past 2 years if they'd wanted to).

I skied there Wednesday.  Thin for this time of year.  Montezuma bowl is open but at the bottom of the lift I had to dodge small trees not covered.

But its not over until the fat lady sings and she hasn't yet.  One year I skied on July 4.  It had snowed the previous night and it snowed during the day.  We could still get the Big Dump.
