The Hexcel collection is growing!

With the latest addition of the Sundance II's, the Hexcel collection now sports five pairs of fine specimens of yesteryear.

HexcelSkis.jpg

Competitions, Sundance II's, Firelite's, Splitails, and newer Competitions.  180, 190, 160, 195, 200, Salomon 444, 500 demo, 444, Driver 997, 500 demo respectively.

Original bindings on the Sundance II's were Tyrolia 360D, S447 or 347 on the Splitails, and don't remember but think Look N77's on Competitions.  And don't worry, I know about using epoxy and letting them dry upside-down.

Splitails are a lot of fun to ski, so incredibly light.  Looking forward to trying out the Sundance II's soon.

Special shout-out  to Dave, Dianne, and Ann (engraved names), sorry, they're mine now.

Anyone know the years these skis were being manufactured?

Why YES, I am ready for retro day.

Probably 74-75 to 80?   I demoed some comps in Sun Valley in 1976.
Nice.  I saw a pair of split tails at a thrift store last summer for 10 bucks.  There's a few other folks with Hexel collections throughout the retro gear thread.

More Retro memories????

Loved the Comps 20 or 30 yrs ago, pre-carve. Super light.
I've got a pair of Hexcel Mirage 180cm with Salomon 626 Bindings in my loft c1980 I seem to remember. They're so light compared to modern skis.

I had a hard time choosing between Sundance IIs and Hexcelerators in 1979.  Got the latter with Tyrolia 360Ds.  Only had 'em a couple of seasons before they were flapping like wet cardboard...

I had a pair of Sundance II's.  They were made with the edges in little sections so it could flex a lot.  They were very light.  I'm only going to guess it must have been around 1976.  They were like wet noodles!

No one with one of the 4-edges-per-ski Hexcel blue ices yet?

That's priceless. Who was the skier back in the late 70's , from Mmmoth on the US Ski Team that skied the black and green Hexcel Comp?   Carson Palmer??
Man, did those pics bring back memories.......I had a pair of the comps in HS......loved those skis.....the graphics where "cutting edge" at the time......
I have some Spectralites with Marker rotomats (scared to use those !).  Looking for tips on how to remount bindings (glue)
I have a pair of green/black ones too, don't know what they were called.  hanging up in the garage, last used in early 80's.
I'll still ski the Rotamats anytime. I skied them for many years back in the day, nothing has changed. They are as good as they were then. It all depends on your comfort factor.

Same here. I am skiing a Tyrolia 350R from time to time w/o issue. I'd ski any of the M4-15 or MRR's I have in my collection.

I bought my HEXEL 542 SLR, 200 cm, mated with Tyrolia 360R, Nordica Astral Slaloms(banana boot) in '80-'81?  Awesome tree ski, turn on a thought.  Those are long gone.

In 1986 I bought SPLITAIL FR, 205 cm, Salomon 747 Equipe, Raichle RX-8.  Quick, light, hard edge ride on the flat groom.  Inferior ski in lift line!!

Neither were high speed skis ... but

put me on a cliff ...

throw a tree in the mix ...

just unweight(not hop), swivel, unreal how easy it was to put the skis where they needed to be.

Still have the SPLITAILS.

I found this discussion and thought someone here might be able to help. I uncovered these tidying up my lockup - a set of brand new (c. 1980) Hexcel Splitail FR  -  203 cm (never had bindings mounted). Marked 203 - 160165. I acquired them in the mid '80's to use as props in a very cool calendar photo shoot.

Can anyone give me an idea of their value? I will put them on ebay or sell privately but don't know what to set as a minimum!  By the way, I live in England - contact on stuart@project100.com

I was a Hexcel Rep in the 70s in Colorado and tested the Blue Ices before they came out. All the Hexcel test skis were marked Skunk Works, tested and sent back where they were usually destroyed. So James Bond like! But boy did those babys hold on hard snow! I have several pair, 205 Comps, 207 Internationals, 205 Primer Cords, that I ski in Vintage races, including one today at Beaver Creek for the Heuga Center. I will race and ski bumps on the 205 Comps. Salamon 555 Gold bindings, still ski great!

I have a pair of Hexcel Firelite 160's that I bought in 74/75 in Northern Indiana.  Only used them 5-6 times - cuz I moved south.

Only owner last used in '70's.  If you want them for your collection, let me know.  Look Nevada bindings.  Also have color-matched Kastinger Boots, size 9.5.   Mike Ge

Here are a few of mine and a pair of Nano's.  I also have a couple chairs/tables I made out of Hexcels, Harts, etc. for my cabin deck in Idaho.  Grew up in Sun Valley and skied Hexcels for years.  Great ski 'til you bent 'em!  I'll take some more pics for you and post.

Another pic with my lovely wife relaxing in the "Adirondacks" of Idaho!  A smattering of retired and redistributed Hexcels, etc. that I repurposed for the fire pit area.  Enjoy!  if you'd like more pic's of '70's/'80's skis, just send a message, I have over a hundred pair Mr./Ms. Stvbck!

A weird but absolutely true story about Hexcel skis.  From 1965 through 1970 I worked for an aerospace firm in Chula Vista, CA, Rohr Corporation.  One of my jobs for a couple of months was trying to figure out why the inventory of aluminum honeycomb core was always off by a huge amount.  During that time I learned a lot about the material and thought it would be really cool as the core in downhill skis.  We bought the stuff from two companies, American Cyanamid(I think) and, you guessed it, Hexcel Corporation.  One day I had the opportunity to meet the Hexcel sales engineer who was our contact for technical and commercial issues.  After we finished our meeting about the inventory issues I mentioned that I thought the stuff would make great skis.  He thought about it for a couple minutes and said it wouldn't work, but now I don't remember why.  In 1972 I moved to Denver and maybe a couple years later I wandered into either Dave Cook or Gart Brothers and there they were, Hexcel skis, my idea.  I was seriously pissed off.  Never did own a pair.

And to add to that, the Al honeycomb was originally developed by Parsons Corp in Traverse City, MI for aerospace applications, helicopter blades specifically. Parsons was approached about a ski application, but they didn't see it as profitable enough to bother with... Parsons was bought out by a company in CA (i'll have to ask my Pop... he worked on the stuff as well) who licensed and provided the Al honeycomb to Hexcel.

I still have a pair of Hexcel Comps I bought in 1976 or 1977.  I haven't skied them in years but they were a great ski.

My high school buddies and I saved our money and one evening in about 1975/76 went to the ski shop here in Minneapolis and bought brand new Hexcels. I bought 195cm Comps, my friend got 190cm Comps, my brother bought 190cm Spectralites. We thought we were the coolest things alive. Whether we were or not, we sure had fun skiing on those boards. I've still got mine, as well as a couple other pairs. I'm looking for a pair of 190-195cm Sundances---anyone have a pair for sale or trade? Mike

Where were they made? I used to work for a company in Bellingham WA, that was formerly known as Hexcel.
