Ski recommendations please for ex-racer iin the Rockies

Thread Starter
New to the forum, and I am struggling to find a ski and boot combo that is suitable. Right now I am on a set of '07 Volkl Karmas 177cm  (119mm 87mm 111mm), and I have the last set of boots I used for racing, Rossignol Race 2's that I bought in 2001.

The skis are great out here in Colorado, except for two reasons. First, I am in bowls often and ski down into the trees where these skis are not totally comfortable in the usually soft moguls, and they are hard to swing around the tight spaces. I feel like I could lose about ten cm and be much more agile in the trees. I would probably be happy with the same ski if it was just shorter. I also ski with my two kids on blues and greens and need something shorter in length and turning radius so I can ski (relatively slowly) with them.

My boots only have about thirty days of use (I had kids and almost stopped skiing) and I use Cat Tracks to preserve the soles, so they are almost perfect, and the fit is dialed in. I am planning on keeping them as I am going to return to Masters racing and catch the tail end of this season. I would like a boot with a different flex pattern (no idea what flex rating my boots have, but they are stiff), that won't beat me up when I am skiing choppy or mogul runs. I know boots are the most important part of the setup and highly subjective; but I've only skied these Rossi and Lange race boots for the last twenty years! I need someone to give me some general help here in narrowing the field.

I have been pointed to the Atomic Crimson ti, and the Nordica HellDiver, as possibilities for fairly hot all mountain skis and thought a 169cm length +/- 2cm might be a good solution.

Thanks in advance

Any racers reading this? : I am picking up a 165cm slalom ski and wonder if anyone has a strong preference between the Volkl Racetiger or the Fischer Worldcup hole ski?

Well, you are all over the map with your ski needs.
Why not just go to a few local stores and see what they recommend for your area.
A lot of us will have two or three pair, or more, to do what you want.
Look for cheaper used skis. You should be able to find two or three pair for the
equal price of one new pair.

As for boots, read the Wiki's at the head of Ask The Boot Guys forum.
Read all you can about boots and fitting boots.
Do not buy boots before you talk to a good bootfitter.
As most everyone here will tell you, boots are the most important part of skiing.
A good skier can make almost any ski work, but boots need be exact fit.
Remember, you just date your skis, but you marry your boots.

Good luck

How good of  a racer are you?

those 177 karmas should be pretty nimble in western bumps and trees.... so its hard to recommend a ski when the skis you have should be great already for a good skier.

the plastic in old boots, even if they were in a closet for 10 years, gets oxidized and brittle and super un-flexible. get new ones.

get a 95 to 100mm ski with race heritage if you still have the strength and technique.

a ski, of course, won't buy you a turn.

then the stuffs all good and it's up to you.
