Well, your weather forecasters are not backing off on this.   Your snow today looks like a practice run for Friday.

I'm glad to say the Sierra is not left out of the fun.  We have had 10-14 inches overnight and have a lot more on the way. This weekend could be good at both ends of the country.  Just in time for the North Face Masters big-mountain dnowboard competition at Kirkwood in the Cirque..

There are lots of places that aren't even skiable except in powder conditions. So frankly if you'd prefer to ski a 10 degree slope fast on hardpack instead of a 50 degree slope in deep powder, more power to ya.

PS - around here the racers do pray for powder. They just know enough to go have fun in it and save the gates for when that's all there is to do.

If only it were 20 instead of 40.

That's total BS. First off powder is a misused word. All fresh snow is not powder. Heavy east coast snow like today is not powder. It's slop.

Steep groomers are great to ski. If you wipe out on one your going straight to the bottom. I know plenty of western skiiers who freak out on ice.

BS? What's BS? That there are places that aren't skiable in hardpack conditions? If you think differently, you really haven't gotten out much.

Nice job throwing the "east coast skiers are better cuz they ski on ice" in there randomly though. Always good for a laugh.

Looks like there is some truth to this mammoth storm. From Jay Peak I am reading reports of 2 ft as of 11 AM with snow falling ~1.5" an hr.... Thats with this mammoth storm still to come.

Meteorologists are saying upstate new york and northern VT/NH will get the motherload.

Don't count it out as snot yet.  Looks like the temps in the flatlands will hover around freezing so you are getting snow man snow.  But, up in the higher elevations the temps might stay cooler.  It will likely be pretty damn good in the early mornings and might even hold soft and fluffy over the weekend.  The higher elevations in PA  were still soft sugar last weekend even though just down the mountain three miles away it was in the 40s.

I never thought I'd say this, but  I don't want this dump! It'll be  powder days at Elk and Blue, but we're supposed to fly out of Philly Thursday to New Mexico for 3 days at Taos and 3 at Wolf Creek. I'm pretty sure PHL will be closed at our flight time tomorrow so  Southwest is letting us change our flight to Friday for free, and I think that's the best bet. My friend the pilot says don't take off in the snow if you can help it.

Hunter has 30 inches and waist deep says their site, and this certainly isn't over!!! wow wow wow
post #43 of 116
Jiminy had 15 inches of the most dense snow that I have skied in since 1980 - Whistler.  This was challenging and the "powder" spotlighted all of my technique defects.  It was fun though.  Only skied for three hours and I was beat.

Johnnysdg, any snow is powder in my world.  It's a powder day if the side walls of my skies are covered.  Yes, today's snow was cement, but it was still a powder day for me.  I'm happy.

today wasnt powder it was very wet snow 20-26 inches worth with fat skis you could go fast.

polariso I think you need fat skis and a steeper hill.
I do need a new pair of short fat boon dockers, what do you recommend.

So what skis do I need to enjoy this?  21" of WET, HEAVY "powder" today at Belleayre. That was work.

Get some S7's.

(Rossignol did not pay me to say that, although it's only fair to say they did give me mine.)

My S7s were almost too small. Kuro or Pontoon would have been nice today. S7 got it done, but it was still work.

dont go short

Id try 183-190 katana at first but in all honesty today it would have been awesome to have some 195 kuros or 202 138s. todays snow was super ehavy!

timberline should have 10inches but the catskills will do the best from the next round with northern vermont fairing the best overall with all if it combined.

I'm not sure if places like Stowe are going to fare so well as the places in the south. As of 11AM Mt Snow had 21"  on the summit. If necessary, and I had some miles  I'd fly into Hartford or Manchester and pick the best spot from there. Heck, is the Ethan Allen express still running on amtrak?

I don't disagee about places not being skiable in hardpack. I was saying BS about the apples to oranges comparison of a 10 degree groomer and a 50 degree slope with powder. If you have two slopes of equal pitch the groomer will be faster. I'm not trying to make a case that groomers are better. Just speaking about physics.
I also don't agree that people who can't ski powder suck. Some people just don't live in an area where they get to ski a lot of powder. Not fresh snow - powder.

I never said east coast skiers are better. Great skiiers are great skiers. I'm just pointing out that different geographies have different conditions and those who ski there will learn to ski those conditions better.

I ski groomers better and prefer it more than powder and I'm skiing 20 years. I live in NY and ski mostly east coast. Power here is usually heavier snow. Its great in the morning to blast thru but the afternoons can get a little hairy when it gets skied off. If I got to ski that waist deep warren miller film stuff I'm sure my views would change.

eh come on today snow was super easy to ski. heavy yes but made it impossible to hit hard snow underneath.

If you couldnt ski the snow today you did suck today didnt you? something was wrong in either you skills/equipment choice.

we will see but Id be willing to bet there will be alot of rain mixing in southern vermont though tomorrow. I hate to say it as I have tons of friends skiing down there but weather models are saying otherwise.
