My Review Comments of the Katana: I am 6' 200lbs and an expert level skier for 39+ years. West Coast mainly, but have skied most all U.S. and some Canadian resorts. In short, these are fantastic skis for powder, but in real life, they actually ski very, very easily and well on groomed areas as well. in powder, they feel more like surfing then skiing as the powder channel assists your flow in and out of the turns, along with the mild rocker. The sole morning I used them at Mammoth lakes, CA there was a foot of fresh snow and the groomers were groomed. In and out of the Avi chutes on chair #22, Drop Out, Wipe Out Chutes and a couple rounds through Hangmans, these ski's were wonderful that one morning they had been used. Snappy semi-quick turns when you need it and stable at speed as well. Great ski, super fun, super easy, can think of zero negatives, other than the fact I have two pairs of pow skis and can't justify that. (Reason for Selling - My Line Sir Francis Bacon Ski's will/are to be my quiver choice for this dimension's range)
You can ski these blindfolded, however get ready to pass folks, as they are stable at speed and confidence builders for sure, but believe it or not, they are actually nimble in the tree's as well. A great set to have in your garage, if you ski fresh snow days, not ice.
Again, you may consider these brand new minus three hours of use. Here are the details - thanks for looking!
Some Magazine and other relatetd Ski Details for you:
"The Katana features a top-end, wood core and vertical sidewall construction, with two sheets of titanium. A 111mm waist gives you float, while the beefy construction gives it great handling on harder snow. For good skiers who want a deep powder ski that they can use on the groomed from time to time." - Volkl.com
"The Volkl Katana Alpine Ski gives expert skiers the power, flotation, and performance to slay the steepest powder lines on the planet. The Powder Channel Tail offers many of the advantages of a swallowtail ski (flotation and a powerful, centered stance) while still allowing you to land switch and power through variable conditions. Combine this with no camber, a slight rocker, and a huge platform, and you have a ski that will redefine how you ski the pow. Volkl gave this big-mountain powder specialist two sheets of titanium laminated to a full length wood core so the Katana satiates the most hard-charging rider out there." -Backcountry.com
"An “easy, fun and playful” ski, the Katana is “ideal for a daily driver.” Volkl has scored again with this versatile shape anchored with a wood core. Testers loved how easy this ski was, not only in powder, but also on groomers; “you can make them dance in tight conditions.” -Freeskier Magazine

- TOUGH BOX is constructed by wrapping the POWER CONSTRUCTION wood core with layers of fibreglass strands. Made up of numerous 4 X 4 wraps, and oriented at different angles the TOUGH BOX increases the strength of the connection between ski binding and ski.
- POWER CONSTRUCTION is Völkl's longest-running construction. Power Construction utilizes traditional vertical sidewalls and a torsion box internal layup. Featured in Race Stock skis as well as all Freeskiing models, this construction provides tremendous grip, stability, and sensitivity when combined with the Sensorwood core.
- MULTI LAYER WOOD CORE TECHNOLOGY is made up of two wood cores: a denser and more powerful core in the binding mounting area and running along the ski's top layer, and a lighter wood core as a lower layer. Bonded together to create one wood core, and wrapped with the TOUGH BOX construction, this new construction retains stiffness underfoot and allowed for softer butter zones at the tips for precise skiing performance, turning and jumping ease, and an improved binding connection platform.
- POWDER CHANNEL: Proven performance from our snowboard division and now available for the Völkl Katana, the POWDER CHANNEL has all the advantages for powder skiing that a swallow tail provides, but with the added benefit of enabling switch skiing and a more durable tail.
