Second - the quality of manufacturing.
he first test skis arrived in Moscow two years ago, and since they are constantly in the very demanding conditions - their "chase" on people's tests, the guys from the shop in Tekstilshchiki "Sport Tourism" (or whatever it is he). Tests by the way, are held on Friday night-Saturday-Sunday at the Bohr barrow on the bank of the Moskva River. So if you love every season change skis - take something cheaper because they are designed for many years. However, part with Kastle and do not want to ... So Kastle makes sense to buy if you want something reliable, high quality and long - several years at least.

Third. . SLIPPERY . Feedback from service specialists - very solid and excellent suction paraffin.

Fourth.. Very soft and smooth glide, with virtually no vibration and with absolutely no bounce on the hard edges

Fifth. Skiing can be black (line FX) or white. Small labels can be other colors, but only if they are small.


Sixth.
  Reliability and durability. Rails must be entirely of metal, and fastening with a separate installation of the heel and toe and adjustable worm-gear made of steel.  No plastic "dogs", switches, latches and so on.

Seventh. Price.  No more expensive top models of leading brands, but not for the mass of the buyer, only for those who choose the model from the top.

 
Overall impression: like.
All the models I tried.. Each in its own way. Really high quality and very good skiing.  Expensive? Да. Yes. But as it turned out, this season - no more expensive top models as usual "mass" brands such as Rossignol, Head, Atomic & etc.

New next season: a new design model MX 98, backcountry model FX 94, slalomka RX SL (!!!) and the new lightweight multi-purpose line Kastle LX - Model LX 72 and LX 82.


Models backcountry can not speak - I have not
. In principle, these skis less powerful than the multi-purpose MX, noticeably lighter, but not as tenacious hard.  And because "our man", who rolls the backcountry, usually not burdened with a large number of notes, then I'm not sure what model Kastle FX will enjoy wide popularity in Russia. For them, as opposed to K2 and other common, though not of such high-quality skis, "last season, just rolled over 5 thousand, with a mounting bracket for 8" to buy will not succeed.

Line LX.. Compared with multi-line models MX, another multi-purpose line - design cap, ski a bit softer, lighter, more maneuverable and more obedient.  This grip edges preserved and versatility, too: in reviews lung testers, skiing perfectly cut average arc and safely, smoothly and bounce, go to the slippage on hard. For higher and higher speeds preferred line of MX, but for the average speed skating - apparently LX interesting, they are more responsive.

Since I do not go to the track, then rate it and feel it is from this point of view. . Model lively, playful, absolutely without thought, halfway between soft and workshop series SL. In the steep arc, I never drove in the free skating literally forces to go short, as soon as you try to run it in the middle arc, becomes an ordinary skis, without lights.  In short frequent arcs without a strong impact load is minimal. With the active work vyplyunet so that will not find it. . Excellent net short arc.  For free skating, I would advise her to consider only those who really want to get a clean slalom For the most severe and massive cross-country skiers - will go and how fan-carver, although the radius may be too long. Just a short arc with no claim to the track - it seems to me better to take the RX.

Did they change sizing on the LX82? I consider myself a decent intermediate. Not hard charging or real aggressive. I weigh about 195. Demoed the LX82 in a 172 length. We were getting some snow and I absolutely loved the ski in soft conditions. On some fairly steep and pretty icy stuff (Liftline at Stowe) I didn't think the ski held as well as my old Nordica Nitrous. I've wondered if I might have been happier with them in a little longer length. I think in 2010 they went from 172 to 180. Since I mostly ski in the East that was important to me. Do you think I skied them too short and any comments on edge hold overall for an Eastern skier? I really did enjoy them in other conditions.

The LX is a very surprising ski. When I skied it last year, I was impressed how well the 172 skied. If I was using this ski in the east, I would be happy with the 172, here in the west, the 180 would be my call but I am about 12 lb less than you. I am not surprised that the Nitrous held a bit better on the hardest of snow, it is  much stiffer ski. Personally I am not a fan of the Nitrous but I do respect its abilities and all things considered I prefer the LX over it, along with quite a few other skis.

I ski in the east and am interested in the mx78s. I would rate myself as a level 6 skier. 5'10 - 195lbs. I am pretty solid on the groomers/want to improve on bumps and trees. Is this the right ski for me?

78 is nice for bumps no doubt. For trees I'd prefer the 98 which does not suck in bumps.

any binding recommendations for the mx78?

read something about plates, is it something I should look into?

I would plate it. I've skied it with the Kastle/Marker KTi plate, the Marker WC Piston and flat and like it best plated.

Sorry for the delayed reply, but it depends on what Sooneron means by "trees." Since he's an easterner like me, saying "trees" may not be tantamount to saying "powder in the trees." Very often in-bounds tree skiing here means, basically, a mogul run with a lot of trees in it. Also, based on his self-description, he's not BWPA, either in terms of experience or typical terrain/conditions. With these things in mind, the 98 may not not be better (although I confess I haven't skied this exact ski).

Great reviews as always.  The Kastle MX78s look tempting based on your review, and I have a few follow-up questions about them  (160cm), vs Atomic D2VF75 (157cm), which a local shop is selling gently used with bindings for $450 (maybe negotiable) and $300 respectively.   I'm looking for a mainly front-side ski with good hard-snow grip and some bump adaptability that's both fun for personal use and useful for teaching and PSIA maneuvers; 

 

Background info: age 65, 5'8", 135lbs+gear, level 7+ skier, ski 30-40 days/year incl teaching.  Current skis:  Volkl 5* (earliest model, like previous T50) 161cm, fun but about shot; Head iM72 163cm, bought from you a few years ago, good all-around and damper than the Volkls; Fischer Watea 84 167cm, good for soft snow incl moderate powder but skittish and underdamped on hardpack.    Ski at various Colorado areas including Summit County, Winter Park/Mary Jane, and Eldora (my home area, often hardpacked).   I teach disabled skiers at Eldora and may teach non-disabled beginners/intermediates in Summit County CO this season.

 

Assuming you're familiar with the Atomics:

 

-- Would these Kastles and Atomics be long enough for me at moderate speeds.  Relative grip, stability, and maneuverability on groomers vs each other and my current skis?  (I know  longer --> more stable, all else equal.)

-- Relative absorption and maneuverability in bumps?  In trees?

-- Relative pros & cons in soft-ish snow beyond what you've said already about the Kastles?

-- Other relative pros & cons for my size/skill/purpose?    Are the prices reasonable?

-- Recommended choice?  Other skis & sizes you think would be better than either of these for my purposes?

^^^^^ Don, these reviews are two years old now. The lineup's changed a bit, MX's have new models, subtle changes to tip and sidecut, etc. Also, suspect Dawg's still avoiding selling skis for racing bikes another week or two. But he has some more recent reviews on the store's website, and on Member's Gear Reviews. My own take is that while the MX78 would be a great ski for your purposes, the new MX83 sounds more versatile without losing much in the way of quickness. It's a MX88 scaled down slightly for lighter skiers. (I've skied the MX78, own the MX88.) And as far as wider Atomics, IMO very nice skis but not in the same ballpark as wider Kastles. The Blizzard 8.0/8.5 or last year's 8.1/8.7, or the Stockli 78 or new VXL would be better comparos.
