Firstly, sorry about a double post - this is in 'general discussion' then I saw this sub-forum and thought it might be appropriate.

I just wanted to let you all know that today I released something I have been working on for a while. It is a 3D trail map for Whistler Blackcomb using Google Earth.

check it out here

I have plenty more ideas for it, but would love to hear from you too. Could you leave a comment on my blog at this page

Really cool! Definitely an interesting way to look at the mountains.

Love the trees at the bottom of Symphony and Flute bowl looks really cool when you zoom in down to the bottom.

I am not associated with the Whistler Blackcomb ski resort, this is something I have done without their input.

I would like to develop the idea further and one day extend it to other resorts. So if anyone is out there who wants to help set up a 3D trail map for their home resort, contact me (through the website would be best).

Cheers

That is awesome.  Nice one dude.  My friends work on a ski site and they made this map of Whistler, which is good.  Not sure it's quite as good as yours though!

Greg,  Awesome maps and interactivity.  Navigation is simple and intuitive, I think this would be a great way to feature additional resorts.  As this site becomes more popular, do you plan to add links to feature paid advertisers?  I could see this working well to show the location of lodging, restaurants, bars, stores, etc.  Very impressive, and the potential is certainly there to expand on it.

Greg,

Love the 3d trail map!

Is there a way you can open it on google earth outside of a browser, so i can overlay my gps tracking on top?

Secondly i would love to see if you could do a first person view of going down the runs when it is selected.

Hi Max, sorry but the answer to the first question is No. I am working on a way to allow you to upload and overlay on the website.

Second question - I am working on that already - I can do it, but am trying to find a solution to make the process better. Each run requires different setting for heights/angles and it is hard to make it work smoothly. I can use 'generic' settings but that is not good enough for me. Also, I am hoping to incorporate a 'changing' POV during the run (ie through eyes and then swing out and watch from above then back to in-eyes) and also a 'model' which will run the trail for you to watch.

It will take time, I am self taught in all things website (taught by Google actually)

Bit of a bump:

I have enabled the 'Streetview' feature from Google Earth. You can now explore parts of the mountain via cameras mounted on the back of a sled.

For example, click here for a 'streetview' at 7th Heaven.

Is it working now?  I can't get it to work on Mac Leopard - with Firefox or Safari.

I've used it as recently as this weekend in Firefox on PC.  There shouldn't be any conflict with the Mac version.  I could try to help, but I don't know the problem you're having.

Wow, is that 'streetview' at 7th Heaven. cool!  Had to install a Google Earth Plug in, then the flight inbound commenced landing on top of 7th Heaven with a 360 degree shot, and could traverse up and down the road a short distance.  Pretty neat flying the Peak to Peak tram too.

The Google Maps API key used on this web site was registered for a different web site. The developer of this web site can generate a new key here.

Error message I got on the 7th Heaven link above.  The "here" link goes to Google Maps API page for developers.  iMac, Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5, FireFox 19.0.
