I cheat and go to little known out of the way resorts that don't have a lot of really good skiers. All you have to do then is get a bit off the beaten path and you have great powder all to yourself.
Best pow I had this year was at Cloudcroft NM. (Most southern ski resort in the country) Dump of over 2 feet and I only saw 2 other skiers all day that could ski the pow and they were instructors, the only ones there I think. Small mountain only 1 lift but just the right steep and I just made laps all day long. Good steep runs without the long race down a groomer to get to the lift. First day on my new Vokl G's. After one nice run I stopped and looked back at my track, there were 4 beautiful tracks side by side on the slope and they were all mine.
I like Taos NM but when you get pow every good skier and his bro eats it up faster than it can fall. You may get 1/2 a day of fresh then it is all eaten up.
Supposed to dump over 2 feet again this week and will go to another small resort without a bunch of experts fighting to wipe out the pow.
If you don't know were to find the good stuff take a lesson and have the instructors take you to their stashes or hire a mountain guide. I ski'd a resort most of my life and thought I knew the entire mountain, then went out with a friend on the Patrol and she took me to places I did not even know were there, and they were dang sure not marked. Only drawback is that she often takes me to places I wish I did not know how to get to. She also has a problem with lifts and wants to hike after she gets to where the lift takes you.
