First to take a guess on which lift deposits more skiers on the mtn. I'd go with a fixed grip quad because the chairs are usually spaced closer together, not that I study these things.
To answer the question about Smuggs I was there this past Thurs. & it is exactly the way you remember it. They haven't done squat to upgrade the mtn. except for adding more condo's if that's what your into. They only make snow on a few runs & if it weren't for the 6" of new snow overnight I think the skiing would have been pretty tough. As it turned out it was good in the morning but got scraped off by the afternoon. The only lifts they have are the same old slow doubles that have been there since it opened eons ago. Jay is still Jay, if you hit it right it's great, if not it can be a cold windblown icy mtn. They added a new high speed quad a few years ago that goes 7/8 of the way up Tram side & opened up a brand new Hotel Jay this season. I haven't been there yet this season to see it. I was never a big fan of Gore Mtn finding it to be mostly flat with only a few short steeper trails on top and it's layed out funny to me making it hard to get around sometimes.
Sorry to here BW was icy & they stopped making snow. That definitely isn't the case at Killington. The new owners have been taking exceptionally good care of the mtn. grooming a large % of the trails on a daily basis, even a lot of the steeper stuff like OL, Cascade, Vertigo & even lower Ovation plus others. They've been blowing snow all over the mtn switching from place to place almost daily. Last week they turned the snow guns on Sun. top to bottom on Superstar & didn't shut them off untill Wed afternoon while also making snow on other sections of the mtn. Thurs. they turned them on at Needles eye top to bottom & also the whole upper section of the Skye Peak chair untill Sat. while also making snow on other sections. I ski Killington alot because it's only 15 min. from our house + I have a season pass. I still ski other places often for a change of pace but find the conditions at K are better 90% of the time. I get discount tickets to other areas through my ski club + I purchase a few books of Vt. passports & it averages about $40-$45 a day. There are two different Killingtons, weekdays & weekends. During the week the place has empty slopes & lifts while you can still ski the whole mtn. & on weekends it's a zoo. The slopes haven't been icy at all at K even though all of NE got hit with a lot of rain 2 weeks ago, like I said the new owners have been taking real good care of the mtn. I still wouldn't recommend it on crowded weekends & holidays. Like I said I'll be in northern NH next week. I think the new owners are planning on staying open late this year (they've been closing late April for a few years now) because there has to be like a 20ft. base on Superstar just like the good old days. The pics above & below are of Superstar last Tues.
