I've heard that they ticket drivers who have an accident up the road if they don't have a 4x4 or chains. They've been enforcing the restrictions more recently, but that still isn't the point. On those days when they call for 4x4s or chains, there is a reason -- safety. Too many times I've seen someone who probably claims they're a great snow and ice driver in some 2 wheel drive car slipping and sliding all over the road creating the conditions for a bad accident that closes the road for hours. Going up the road in a 2 wheel drive car slows down everyone else, especially when you have to get out and give them a push or stop to see if anyone got hurt when they slid off the road. There's no problem saving some money by not getting a 4x4, but on those days when there are restrictions, the smart thing is to park at the lower lot and ride the ski bus up the mountain--it does everyone a favor.
