Phil,

Are you going to Winter Park?  If so, want to test some Kastle stuff together? I am sure that booth will be my first stop on Monday, followed by Stockli.

Sorry, I will be doing my "on snow" at Stratton. I've skied the LX already (I was asked not to post the review yet) and really don't need to get on any of the others again.

Some of these really test the resolve that it's about how it skis and not what it looks like
post #65 of 96
I wouldn't be surprised if the look of the top sheets attracts more of the snowboard crowd back to skiing, just the appeal of the image: irrevererent, wild, sexy. and that may be the intention of the mfgrs.

What if we don't want'm back???

And why are we talking about 2011 skis when we are not even halfway through the 2010 season?

You may not want them back, but the people who sell them do.

There are a lot of exciting choices in 2011.

Dimensions: 134 x 114 x 124
Characteristics: 300mm Tip Rocker, Flat Square Tail, Full Woodcore

The story:

So the inspiration for the ski came from the head freeride ski designer Lionel Favret. He said to Kaj Zackrisson and I one day, "We will build a ski for you. We wouldn't want to send you two into a Formula 1 race with a Citroen, so the ski is as you wish. Build your Formula 1 ski".
The excitement to build a ski one-hundred percent from scratch, as I wanted to build the ski was nearly over-whelming. But once I settled down the conception process was an easy one. It's something I've been dreaming of for years upon years.

I wanted something that withstand the rigor of hard-charging, variable conditions while still combining some of the pleasurable elements of recent ski design with regards to effortless pow skiing. And I wanted it to stomp cliffs, biiiggg cliffs.

So the design you see above is what we came up with. Now let me tell you why we picked the design we did.

Size: 194 cm. We wanted something that had the long turning, hard charging capabilities of the 202 XW Lab but with a bit shorter length for more versatility and tighter turning proficiency. Hence a pretty damn big ski but not overwhelming length by any means.

Dimensions: 134 x 114 x 124. We stayed with a similar radius to the Rocker because that radius is a great radius for long super-G turns, a non-hooky feeling in pow and butterability in the deep. We wanted 114 underfoot because we estimated that 114 is a great width to still sink the skis when landing big airs but still staying afloat while ripping turns. When you get past the 120 underfoot range landings become a bit harder and more jolting because the skis don't sink into the snow and utilize the cushion of the snow to soften your landing.

300mm Tip Rocker. Because rocker rules. It's the only way to achieve effortless flotation in pow. We stuck with a minimal amount of rocker to allow the ski to still be easily manageable in super variable conditions. I'm sure most have felt what a lot of rocker feels like on crud and windboard, and I'm sure none of you like that tip slapping and chattering feeling that a lot of rocker supplies in those conditions.

Flat Tail. Because even though some say there is no reason to not have a twin tip on all skis, I feel like I've found a reason. And that is that twin tips tend to wheelie and squirrel out on big air landings. Square, flat tails sink so well into landings that stomping becomes a breeze. I've definitely found that flat tails are essential for those huge hucks.

Woodcore. Because we wanted it stiffff. And stiff this ski is. The tail is adamn 2 x 4 and punches through nearly all conditions. The tip still has some nice poppy characteristics and isn't a brick, but the tail, g'damn it's like a teenager at a strip-club stiff.

Overall, I got my first prototypes in March of last year and didn't ski a single other ski until park ratting it up in Hood this summer. It's all that I've ever wanted in a ski. And it better be because I fucking designed the goddamn thing!

Great post.  Have you come across any info on the Salomon Sentinel and how it might compare/differ to the Shogun

Skied the Sentinel yesterday. It is a world apart from the Shogun which is medium firm but pretty playful. Playful is not a word I'd associate with the Sentinel as it is It is stiff, powerful and requires commitment from the skier.

Along with it's frontside counterpart, the Enduro. Both are some fine skis with some horsepower that Salomon should be proud of.

Three buddies were walking toward me across the plaza. They all go big. They had three different ski models (Scott Schmidt Pro, Katana, Legend XXL) on their shoulder, but all had flat,  square tails. It looked bad-a$$.

Salomon is certainly back. A friend who skis for them told me a few years ago he was having trouble sellecting a real driving ski. Not a problem this year, with several burly models to chose from.

The new Volkl Kendo is a mix between the bridge and a mantra it has the shape of the bridge but the structure of a mantra. Its a great ski, also on the new Volkl Racetiger you can wax the side wall.

Same here.  I have never considered a ski b/c of the graphics, but have definitely crossed some off the list because of outright weird and sometimes dark and negative motifs.  It does annoy me that the marketing departments seem to think that we all want to be 19 year old pot-smoking jibbers at heart, and therefore paint the ski's with the modern interpretation of psychedelic "grooviness."  For any marketing departments who are reading: You'll sell a lot more skis if you put out two graphics on the same ski, one for whatever the current fad happens to be, and one for the people who don't want to be stuck looking at the latest version of marketing "cool" on the lift or the tuning bench.  I'm also tired of names which try and tell me something about myself.  I know who I am, and don't want to be told that I'm a Grizzly, or an Enforcer, or some type of Japanese sword, or somebody's Nemesis or Lord.  Please stop that ridiculousness and just give me a good ski with your company name if you feel you must.

^^^

Rossignol has been doing this for the S7.  Currently there are 4 different topsheets to choose from - Women's BC 110, 2010 S7 with the owl and tree graphics, 2011 S7 with the little monsters, and the Pro Mancini.

Anyone know if there will be any changes to Volkl's AC line of skis?  Like make the AC-30 less stiff, for example?

Can anyone fill me in on the 2011 Nordica Jet Fuel? The rep at yesterday's demo claims these are an all new non-metal construction with performance somewhere between this years CA and TI models. I hate to wait until next year if these are essentially the same as the current CA but with ah, colorful graphics added :) Thanks!

alot of people are going to getting much better for and aft balance thats for sure!

there is poster on here who has his 7 year old daughter on the Mini-Gotama she doesnt/cant ski backseat any more since there is no tail to ski backseat on.

I am loving the low rise rockered skis they rip everything and everything for me. It has also made my skiing better IMO as getting back it simply not an option.

Yea they changed a little i cant find a picture but i think that it is just the graphics
post #82 of 96
what are the dimensions and lengths on the Salomon Sentinel?
These are this years, not 2011? The white one is the European Bandit (different top sheet or called something else in the US) that's going to be discontinued at the end of the year - http://www.ski-review.com/content/view/1686/34/

The Rossi catalog I have for 2011 does not have any Phantom SC series skis.  I was assuming they were gone next season.
The Sentinel 129/95/121 in 184.

The Phantom series has been replaced in the 86 and 97 widths with new models titled S86 and S97. Both are claimed to have some level of early rise. I didn't pay real close attention but IIRC the rise is uhhhhhh..........rather minimal.

I've seen photos of wider Blizzards, One and up, that look to have a yet again revised slider system. Appears to have a more traditional plate for the slider instead of the embedded side holders of the last few years. Anyone know about this? Will it also appear on Titan series? Thanks.

I just looked at the new women's K2 line..Nice, way nicer than thispast season'sgraphics offerings.
The psychedelic colrs and just fugly art were enough to make me wonder what they were thinking, and who they thought were going to actually buy this ski.
Looks like they saw the failure of those designs, and made them a bit more 'looker-friendly' for the soming season. I can't see a lot of the detail fron the pix, but based on the info I can glean now, way better.
I wanted a new pair of Lottas to replace my very oooold ones, but thinking of looking down at those graphics on a long, slow lift line ride was the deciding factor.

It's not about who you are...it's about the skis.
That's my point.  I would prefer that the marketing departments stop trying to make "lifestyle" statements with graphics and names.

I think we just are not gettin enough skis with 'turbo' or 'carbon' in the names...
...more acronyms needed..., like WTF, or LMAO
and the ski manus are all totally missin the boat, like... nobody has a 'DUDE' line... a whole lotta free advertisin goin to waste
I think they should license stuff: "Raidier Nation" line, or like the Sarah Palin line - skis with just huge shovels on both ends and no real susbstance in the mid-section.
and then there's the animal opportunity - like 'Race-Hippo' or sometin like that...
... car names... "Trabant Turbo"  ???  "GOO"  - Grand Opel Omologato
then there's numbers...  '1' or '2' or maybe 3.14159265358979323846...

yeah, why are we stuck on this whole lifestyle thang...?

and why all the graphics? they could just buy some shelf contact paper at the local Bed,Bath & Beyond... I mean, I'm all for little swirly flowers...
