Gear help for Tahoe trip next week

Help, I need some advice from anyone who is at Tahoe.  I'm leaving next Thursday (21 Jan 2010) for my first trip the season (thank God).  Obviously the destination is Tahoe.  I need to choose between my older Volkl AC4 skis or my Volkl Mantra.  I've been watching the web sites (Mt. Rose, Alpine, Squaw) and the snow is looking a little thin right now, so I hate to bring out the Mantra if we're on hardpack or thin cover.  So to all of you who are there, what would you recommend, the AC4 or Mantra.  After all, I never truly trust the snow reports.

For a sad note, an old friend who lived in the area that I would call and always trusted his advice passed this past summer.  He was far to young to die, a wonderful person, a great skier and will be missed by his friends.  Matt, we'll have a drink on the summit for you this year!

Tahoe's going to get slammed next week!

There will be plenty of snow by next thursday.  I'd bring the good skis and rent some powder boards for friday.

Leave both the skinny skis at home. Demo something fat and bring a snorkel.

I love my Mantra in the deep stuff, after all it wasn't long ago that 96 mm waist was considered a Powder Ski.  Always seems to handle everything well BUT your advise does give me something to think about.  Thanks

it looks like a series of storms rolling in next week. Just keep your fingers crossed that they don't squeeze by us.  While we could always do with more, coverage is not that bad.  We have already had 4-6 inches this week at Lake level. Assuming you are flying to Reno, they are pretty good at keeping it clear - I would worry more about O'Hare!

Bring your mantra's and if they (the weather genius's) are wrong you should be fine.
If they are right on the other hand, demos are in order.
Hell, I live out here and if they are right, I'll be demoing.
