Whitetail, PA MLK crowd?

I'm flying up to Maryland for work next week and landing on MLK day in the afternoon.  I was thinking that I might head up to Whitetail for the night session.  Is it going to be a zoo that day?  If so, I might skip it and go Tuesday night.  Any thoughts?

They are currently in great shape and have been drawing big weekend crowds recently. Therefore, Monday will be zooish if good day, but Monday night should not be too bad.  Tuesday night will be better and maybe less skied off?  Might want to play this by ear depending on which day has best weather.  We are in for a mild warm-up later this week.

Thanks James.  I have some flexibility so I could go Monday night AND Wed night, or Tue / Wed, or just once on any of the three nights.  I did 3 or 4 nights out there last season and other than the one night when it was 16 and windy they were all fun.

Liberty is worth checking out too for variety.  About the same distance from many parts of MD suburbs.  Runs are a touch shorter, but has a couple of short pitches that might be steeper than anything at Whitetail.  Mid-Atlantic ski areas are having a great early season.

Try Ski Roundtop near Harrisburg, PA.  It will have lesser crows than Whitetail or Liberty.  The conditions there are typically better because the slopes face North East, where Liberty and Whitetail mostly face South.  There is a warming trend forecast for the end of this week.

Things tend to get (a lot) better after 4pm.

I think we should have a 'stuck at Wt on MLK day'  meetup thread.

I'm turning up for my trip out west, so I've been to Whitetail the past two weekends.

On friday 1/1/2010 it was empty, skiied right down, right onto first chair all day long.

Last sunday I arrived around 10am they were putting cars in the bottommost lot so the place was packed. The liftlines (I skiied mainly on the 'expert' section to the right) were about 15-20 minutes long, but if you're a single and used the single line, the wait was less than 5 minutes! Didn't seem to crowded on the slopes,  I pretty much blasted right down all day without congestion on the slopes.

About 2pm the place seemed to significantly thin out, not sure if that was people who bought the 4 hour ticket leaving, or the Football games but it was nice, you'd have a coupla minute wait even if your were in the regular liftline.

I skied Roundtop once early in the season last year.  The place wasn't 100% open but it was good for an early season "fix".  The only problem was there's more traffic trying to get there in the afternoon from Columbia, MD than this is getting out to Whitetail.

I'd like to try out Liberty so I'll take a look at it too.  I'm going to be solo so I can meet up with anyone who happens to be out there.  I too am tuning up for my next trip out west.  I fly out to Breck with a group of my friends on Wed Feb 3.

At Whitetail, I spend most of my time on that expert chair too and only venture off of it to break up the monotony.

Thanks for the replies.

Yep--Weekend/Holiday days it's RoundTop hands down. Evening trips I prefer Whitetail, but Liberty's okay in a pinch.

If you need an example of Liberty on a weekend day simply grab 20 people (20 you don't like makes it more realistic) and spend an afternoon in a phone booth.
