I need to buy a pair of skis this week. First a little background, before I went skiing for 4 days this past week in Tahoe, I had not been skiing for nearly four years. Before that, I had skied about 4-5 times a year, my family rented out a cabin for a week, we live about 3.5 hours away in the Bay Area. I usually stick to black diamonds, I am trying to teach myself to ski moguls well since they seem to be on every difficult/challenging run. I can through them but not very quickly or efficiently. This last week I started out by renting rossignol bandits 168cm and I returned them the next day, I was told they had a foam core and I hated how flimsy they were. For the next two days I used a Rossignol Phantom 80 171cm, they have a wood core and I liked them a lot better, more stiff and were much better in the moguls and on the groomers. The final day I went to my favorite ski area in Tahoe, Alpine Meadows with 2008 Volkl TigerSharks 175cm. They were very fast, really good on the groomers but I tried to take them on the waterfall (if any of you know alpine meadows), a double black with rocks and lots o moguls, very narrow and i crashed at the beginning and struggled the rest of the way down. I struggled on any moguls and anythings that wasnt on the groomers. I am 5'11 and 155lbs, not very strong in the legs and those TigerSharks were too long and two heavy, the ski shop offered me 240 dollars for them. So I passed, now I need to find some skis that fit my size, I like relatively stiff skis. I am going to be skiing on the east coast, so they need to be decent on the ice. I looking for something light, but stiff that does well on everything with a preference toward moguls. I buying used to keep in the 200-400 price range. I heard Atomics are largely foam core, and K2 are flimsy, so I think those are both out.
