OK, I need a new set of skis.
I typically ski about 25-30+ days a year. Of those, 15-20 are on the east coast. 10 of those are on hard packed at places like Loon, Waterville, and Cannon, which consist of mostly hard packed, some moguls and when we get snow east coast powder. For this type of skiing, I use my Atomic SX11. I have grown to love these skies. They are fast and I can really move them. But they kind of suck in any real snow, they suck in the trees, and are not so good when it gets too chopped up as they sink and I tend to get tossed around as they are kind of narrow underfoot so they tend to get thrown around in any choppy snow.
I do an additional 5-10 days off piste at JAYPEAK, the Glades of Sugarbush, and Mad River Glen. This is my favorite skiing. For these days, I use my Solomon 1080 Guns. These are WIDE they turn super easy and are great in the woods and in the deep stuff. The problem is, they suck on the groomers, they suck on ice, and they suck on hard pack. They tend to slide and not carve. They tend to chatter with any speed and are way too flexible. When I go out west (5-10 days) these are the skis of choice, unless there is no snow, then, they suck.
I am looking for a ski that is in between the Atomic SX11 and the Solomon 1080 Gun. I want something a bit wider underfoot that will allow me to ski pow but will still be good on the groomers. A ski that can handle the bumps and most important the trees while being stable enough on the groomers and hard stuff. Any suggestions.
I am leaning towards the Volkl Gotama 2010. Any thoughts?
