Best time to hit Vail, Breck, Copper, Keystone area?

I have a newphew who lives in Leadville, CO and I'm planning to go out and visit him for a long ski weekend this year

I'm thinking of either early March or early April.  Does anyone have any thoughts on when the snow would be better?

Thanks!

Snow will be better in March,  fewer lines in April.

Thanks Shredhead!  Since we're talking in relatives here, do you have a recommendation given the tradeoff?

I would probably lean toward April since I really, really hate lift lines.   You would also have a better chance at finding discounted tickets then?

I would avoid April if you care about the conditions you ski in.  It's really hit or miss at that time of year.  I've skied powder in April, but have also skied in complete slush with quite a bit of the mountain closed.

I agree that early March is probably more reliable in terms of good snow conditions than early April.  That being said we skied Breck/Vail/Copper in early April 2007 (Easter break) and the conditions were mid-winter with snow every day.  April is also a bit warmer, days a bit longer and prices are sometimes dramatically cheaper.  How do plane ticket prices compare?

All in all I would probably choose March unless prices are MUCH more expensive than in April.  If that was the case I would gamble and try April again.

It'll cost about $200 more for a ticket/hotel/car rental package in March than in April.  To me, it's worth the extra money if April is really going to be hit-or-miss.  I'd be very disappointed to get out there and have rotten conditions.

agree on March vs. April.  Living here love to ski on tax day weekend (normally when K'stone and Breck close, or close to it).  At both places April is warmer and less crowded, BUT my sons and i found the last two years that from 1:30 to closing (4PM) the snow is quite a bit "mushier".  Obviously the tradeoff for skiing in a light softshell and long sleeved t shirt.  March is far more reliable, and if i recall, better chances of decent dumps still (more unusual in April).  If you avoid the spring  break weeks, March should not be super crowded, esp. if you have here for a week and do the weekdays skiing.  Not sure when they ramp down the tix prices, check their websites. I believe if you hit K'stone and Breck and avoid the Dercum crowds at Keystone by immediately either skiing over to the back mountains or taking the lift over; and at Breck hit Peak 7, T Bar, Peak 9 upper only, or peak 10 you can miss the big crowds on most days.

Man, I hadn't even thought about spring break.  Unfortunately the only time in March that I can go is the weekend of March 11-15, which is the start of spring break for Colorado State.
