First, all names are fictional and any phonetic similarity between a screen name and a real name is pure coincidence. Names are omitted to protect the innocent. (or something like that.)
Poaches that risk the lives of others are unacceptable to our little contest. We are lightweight poachers who subsist in the grey area of poorly marked closures, or ambiguous directives.
Oh my god, I pulled off the poach of the year today, thus far, I'm almost certain.
Poor signage and unmarked entrance were the: gee, sir, I thought this part was open escape story.
So this area has been closed all year. and you know what that means. smooth as a baby's bottom. a slightly concave chute, about 30 feet wide, rolls steeper and steeper as you enter, 6" of soft windbuff . Skied once this year by patrol. closed because it is near some rocky stuff that a gaper might wander into. snow is absolutely rock stable, holds to a vertical wall like soft chalk.
thing is, the entry is right under the lift, in the sunlight, an open saddle area. I look down the lift line for redcoats. at least 10 of my buddies seem to be up there cheering me on and heckling me. we're all laughing. I make quick work of the hike across rocks and weeds to the entry and drop in. oh my god. 8 of the most sensual, round, forbidden turns a man could ever dream of making. and the larceny of it just made it better. ski into the trees. stop, hide. ski to the next trees and look around. rip down to a different lift and disappear.
a couple runs later there is a closed sign planted right in between my ski tracks entering the chute.
an hour later a buddie asks me to join him and I say: dude, I just...... and before I could finish the sentence he said: "those are your.... in.......bowl! I knew it.they looked good!"
and that completed the beautiful circle of the perfect poach.
edit: omit any reference to patrol as they are definitely, always trying to do the right thing for all of us.
