JH or Whistler: Need Help for Second Wk of January

Hi guys-

Hoping that you can help me here.  My wife and I are planning a four-day trip for January 10.  Right now, we've narrowed options to Whistler and JH.  Pros of Whistler (besides the skiing, which we've been to a bunch) are that we can drive (we are in WA state) and they are just getting dumped on, so snow doesn't seem like an issue.  While I haven't been to JH in a while and would like to go back, I'm afraid to commit right now to air + hotel, since cover seems light.  So, at this point, I'm leaning towards having Whistler as first choice and waiting until around New Year's to make a call on Jackson, which means that I'd take my chances on getting air/hotel there.

Any thoughts/advice on this strategy?

Thanks for any feedback.

I would wait until the last minute and then drive where ever had the best conditions.

Sounds like a pretty easy decision.  You've mentioned all positives about Whistler and no real negatives.  If you poke around on Epicski at bit it seems like JH needs a good few dumps to make it worthwhile.  There are a few prominent JH locals who post regularly.  If you want 1st hand info, PM Bob Peters, Harkin Banks, tetonpwdrjunkie or Skiing-In-Jackson.  It could happen, but compared to the early season plastering Whistler has gotten, just on snow conditions alone, Whistler makes the most sense.

Whistler.

Whistler.  It looks like they're getting the goods again.  I've just secured lodging for that week after saying I wouldn't go to Whistler this year for fear of price gouging.  I got a place with some other folks for $45 per night per person.  I paid more than that for a Motel 6 by the freeway in Nowhere, Texas.

+1 on Whistler, they've got the snow... I don't think Bob's telling you to skip Jackson to keep you from crowding up his ski area.

Thanks for pointing out that my cryptic comment COULD have been taken that way.

No...

Sad to say, we just don't have that much snow yet.  We need two or three BIG storms to make things good.  We're having fun skiing but it's pick-and-choose terrain and there are LOTS of rocks around.  No Lower Faces or Hobacks are open.

We've had some snow the last couple days and there's a moderate amount more on the way, but if *I* had the option of flying to Whistler to ski right now or flying to JH to ski right now, I'd take Whistler.

Also, we won't have anybody here in mid-January anyway.  We never do.

Thanks all!  Based on all the feedback (and weather), I think this is a pretty one at this point...

Bob, just how bad is Jackson relative to other seasons since you have lived there?  Christmas week appeared to be more restricted than any season since 1997-98.  Still no lower faces or double blacks open from the resort website today despite 35 inches in the week or so.

My sympathies, as January is usually the prime month at Jackson.  My late January 2006 trip remains a personal highlight.

You might want to check out the freezing level for Whistler for the next week.  Someplace in the interior might be better?
