Is it time for another helmet vs no helmet debate?!?
On the front page of the MPR website this morning.... Just nice to know that sometimes things do work the way they are supposed to.....Sounds like she took a pretty nasty fall.
Doctor: Ski helmet saved 6-year-old's life
by Tim Nelson, Minnesota Public Radio
St. Paul, Minn. — Doctors say a ski helmet saved the life of a 6-year-old girl when she hit a tree on an evening ski outing last week.
Julia Griggs, a first grader at Wildwood Elementary School in Mahtomedi, was skiing with her father at Afton Alps Thursday night. She raced down the slope ahead of him and hit a tree, head on.
Michael McGonigal, one of the doctors that treated her at Region's Hospital, said the pink helmet Julia was wearing did what it was designed to do.
"It protected her brain and that's something that we can't really fix unfortunately," McGonigal said. "But the helmet kept her in perfect condition so she is fine other than a few things that will heal up now with a little extra care."
Julia suffered a broken nose and a broke both of the bones in her lower right leg. But her parents said she'll likely go home on Tuesday.
The National Ski Areas Association says a recent survey showed ski helmet use has nearly doubled in the last decade. Still, less than half of skiers and snowboarders wear helmets.
