Snowbasin did not suck today! - Page 5

John,

Sorry no pics. Too many other things to fiddle with on a storm day.  Perhaps tomorrow.

Tim,
Glad you got to ski some new lines.  You are right about the snow being different on various portions of the mountain.  Yesterday was deeper up high on the NW exposures.  That is until it was just plain deep everywhere.  Yesterday you were more "in" the snow, & the tight trees was were it was at.  Today was more like surfing on top with high speed SG turns.  2 different kinds of fun, but I feel sorry for anyone on skinny skis today ;).

BTW, it really has been mid winter conditions & the best skiing of the season.  It sucks that resorts are closing.  Snowbasin had a relatively busy day today.

I'd say yesterday was the best day of the season hands down. It was crowded in the morning and got tracked out, but right after a lot of people cleared out in the afternoon, the snow really picked up and filled in the tracks. It was like 9 a.m. all over again.

I'm hoping to get up there again today for the dropping of some of the ropes.

I was afraid that was going to happen.  I was one of those people that left early afternoon (had to get to work) and my last run down John Paul was one of the better runs of the day.  The falling snow had filled in some of the tracks (I believe the wind had a hand in it also).  It was kind of funny when I checked the snow report and they were reporting 0" new snow and it snowed at least 2 or 3 inches while I was there!

A friend at work went to Snowbird this morning and said that, while it was really nice, most of the mountain was still closed when he had to leave just after noon and the snow had set up quite a bit since yesterday (presumably).

Yes, the wind did play a hand in it.  Didn't really snow much last night, but much of the leeward stuff on JP filled in nicely for some smooth runs first thing this morning.  It did warm considerably during the day today, & although the N & NW aspects remained nice, most of the S & SE slopes got pretty wet.  There were a few observable wet slides outside the boundaries.

I thought that the skiing was good though as you said on some of the slopes the snow was a lot wetter and heavier--just have to adjust your technique to the conditions. Higher off John Paul, in the trees of Shooting Star, I thought there was some nice powder for much of the day. It did look like there was a slide inbounds off Mt Ogden, but maybe the ski patrol set it off.

Yeah, I was thinking it was going to read 4 or 5 inches, and then, just 0. Powder Mountain also had 0 posted in the morning (I assume they got some of the same snow).

Oh well, less reporting is better for us, I suppose.

I am heading to Sun Valley for the weekend.  I hope the next powder days wait till I get back.

Another powderday on Tuesday, with decent weather after another quick hitter Monday night.  of course, "no pics on a powder day".  Strawberry closed on Sunday, so I got the skins on yesterday & made the trek to the top & outer reaches of the normal ski area boundary for some more fresh tracks.

Did some car shuttles today & found close to corn snow for a few laps.  If it freezes tonight, the South & East slopes should be going off tomorrow!
Thanks,

Some sloppy snow out in the east this morning:

Snowbasin closes tomorrow .  Had some great early morning corn runs the past couple of days, but a low temp of 43 degrees last night didn't quite do it.  Got my first 9 holes of golf this PM in short sleeves

Conditions are at their peak, but the skiers have turned to spring and summer activities.  Same thing here, and unfortunately, with the move this year, I am also guilty.  More snow due in the Sierra tonight and tomorrow.

It was in the 70's today around here.  Had our end of season golf tourney today, but snow is forecast again on Wed.
Glad to hear there is still good snow in the sierras.  I may be heading out there by next week, hopefully there will still be some good BC skiing to be had.

Nah, just some wannabes .

It was really great meeting & skiing with some of the Bears over the past 2 seasons.  I hope that it continues in the future.

Everyone have a fun & safe summer.  As for me, I have a feeling the skiing is not quite over yet.  I did go for my first bike ride this afternoon, but the forecast is for snow beginning tomorrow.
I will report as things develop.

Stay cool,

JF

Happy Earth Day!
Well it's not Snowbasin, but I felt it was appropriate to earn some turns today.  I did drive a few miles to get up to the snow.  It was a little grey, so pictures didn't come out too well.
