Iphone Ski Apps?

So I got the new iPhone 3Gs 32gb and I was browsing through various apps that I thought would come in handy for skiing.  There's the obvious "TrailMaps" app which also comes in a 3D paid version, there's a number of good snow report apps from company's like REI and The North Face.  There's also an app called "Ski Lodge" which offers snow reports, live on-mountain cams, driving directions, and local newspaper articles for 400 resorts all over the world.

Anybody know of some other good ski apps?

Found another app called "View2Ski" which allows the user to choose any mountain in the world and view the live webcam. The "Ski-o-meter" and "The Ski Computer" apps allows the iPhones gps system to give you your speed and distance traveled on skis.

I personally use the one by REI, it has all the features I wanted other than trail maps, which I use iTrailmap for.

Iphone Ski Apps?

I have 2 Iphone skiing apps.  The first one is JH Tapped, which I have mentioned in an another thread.  It tracks your position on the JH Trail map.  Logs and plots all your runs on the map, keeps track of vertical by day and season.....  It also has all of the points of interest at the base and contact phone numbers.  I haven't used it on the hill much yet.  But it does show my house when I am "off the map" and push the override.  I also have a North Face app that lists a ton of resorts and gives weather and snowfall info for each.  It also has links to several avalanche forecasts.  There are a bunch of others I have seen.  I want to get a topo app for backcountry skiing, but I am resisting paying for any app.  The two I have now were free.

I'll look for it for you.  I spent an evening looking at the app store and saw a couple that seemed like they would work.  Read some reviews and followed links....  It seems the best one allowed you to download the maps you needed and keep them in the phones memory.  That way if you had no service, you could still see the map.  Others require you to be in range.  Either way for full function I think you might need some sort of connectivity.

skireport is pretty cool, it has a instant blog function, so you can hear first hand account. i use that + rei and northface apps. all are good.

Iphone Ski Apps?

I have been wanting to develop a ski related app, but haven't come up with any new ideas that haven't already been done well (or just done over and over).  If anybody has a need for a ski app that makes sense for a new project, let me know.  I am waiting for that Eureka moment on the chairlift when the perfect idea hits me....

Not directly ski related, but I just submitted this one to Apple, should be up in a week or so:

It's a multi-function augmented reality app for the iPhone that serves as a compass, GPS, map, zoom camera, and two-axis inclinometer.  Will sell for 99 cents.  I need to check with the mods to see if it's OK to hand out some promo download coupons here when the app is available on iTunes.

Skier219, that looks like a really cool app.  Does it really allow you to zoom the camera and take a picture from it.  That is one of my wife's biggest complaints.  I can't wait to try it out!

Skier219, you are welcome to handout promo coupons for your application.  Now if you could just write an application that would help me correct the mistake in buying a Blackberry Bold.

It does 2X and 4X digital zoom (which happens via enlarge and crop).  Now, personally, I don't like digital zoom, but zoom apps have been extremely popular on the App Store, so I think many customers do like it.  On an iPhone 3GS, the 2X zoom looks pretty good.  4X is very fuzzy, but could have uses for some people.

I did discover that you can buy "magnetic" lenses for the iPhone to get a true optical zoom.  I may give those a try sometime.  You stick a small metal ring to the back of the phone around the camera opening, and then the various lenses grab on to that via magnet, making it easy to swap them in and out.

Cool, I will do that when the app is available -- maybe we can even make it an Epic promo/giveaway or something.  In the meantime, let me try handing out some promo codes here for a game that just came out today, called "Cover Match".  It's a fun little match game that uses album cover art stored on an iPhone or iPod Touch:

        http://hunter.pairsite.com/covermatch/

Here are 5 promo codes to start, one per person, first come / first serve.  Please make a note below about which code you used.

EKAKMYAF3AT4
9XA6EALTPXWF
HYTTPLEX6EFL
PPY9E4K6YFME
RYETT6LJXM3X

To use a code, look for the "redeem" link on the iTunes store home page, where you can paste the code to start the free download (there is also a redeem option in the iTunes App Store app on the iPhone/iPod, if you choose to look at "Featured" and then scroll all the way to the bottom).

I may have more codes to offer in a couple days.

Okay, I live in MT, there's no iPhone available here, so I don't know anything about them.  But, watching the Verizon commercials, it looks like there's no "3G" service in Jackson.  Don't you need the 3G service for these apps?

From what I have heard, AT&T is suing Verizon because that particular map is misleading.  So don't base too much on it.

Many of the ski apps have much of their data internal to the app, and only need to go online for ski reports, weather, etc.  Maps and other static information are stored on the device.  GPS works independent of the cell network.

I used the heck out of my iPhone when I was in Jackson Hole last February.  I don't recall paying much attention to the signal/network specifics -- it just worked when I needed to use it.

No, you don't need 3G for these apps.  AT&T's Edge network will work just fine if you can't pick up 3G or wireless.  There's also the option of jailbreaking and unlocking your iPhone with blackra1n so that you can use it with any carrier, including Verizon.

Skier219, nice looking apps.  Put me on the list to demo that thing when you get it finished.

Hey Guys and gals,

Getting sorted for the Xmas break and a trip to the Alps for a bit of Ski action, does anyone know or have any good Iphone Apps for weather, run maps alittude, speed distance etc?

For weather I use:
Snow Reports
REI Snow Reports
Skull Candy

For webcams - View2ski

For a lot of other info, I just got a new app called Theodolite, which I can't wait to try out on the slopes.

I have JHTapped which is a great app specific to Jackson Hole.  I have written about it in an another thread already.  I also have apps for Altitude, Speed, Topo Maps, and Snow Reports which were all free and downloaded from Itunes.

Hey, that's my app!  Let me know how you like it.  We're going to give away a few copies here on Epic soon as part of a contest.  Should be fun.

So far, it's fun. I'll need to upgrade to a 3Gs to get the compass stuff working. I'll maybe test it out for real on a walk tomorrow
