Contest for the EPIC Skis!!!

Make these skis your very own!

You know what you want in a ski. You've logged many miles on the slopes, demoed more than a few pairs of the latest and greatest, and maybe even reviewed them here on EpicSki. Here's your opportunity to exchange your wisdom for your wallet and actually design a pair of EPIC skis for a market of one, and that's YOU! Our own krp8128 (Kyle Pilote) will build the skis to your specifications with a topsheet designed by EpicSki's art director, Peter Galletta, if our panel of experts deems yours the winning entry in our exclusive Contest for the EPIC Skis. All you have to do is write a convincing argument in 300 words or less, with whatever eye candy you choose to include at no charge against the word count, in this thread by the midnight (MST) December 21 deadline. We'll run a poll in a companion thread that will go until midnight December 28, with the winner announced December 29. Must play to win!

Important note: The topsheet of the skis must be as pictured, the base color must be black, and the length must be 186 cm. or less. All other specifications are determined by the contest winner. However, if you want the skis to be longer than 186 cm., or to add carbon fiber or a metal layer to the skis, the following additional costs will apply. Otherwise, the skis are completely FREE OF CHARGE!

  1. Length over 186cm-$25
  2. Carbon Fiber-$50: A single layer of unidirectional carbon fiber added to stiffen the ski along it’s length.
  3. 7075 Aluminum-$125: Essentially generic Titanal®, used to stiffen the ski along both its length and in torsion (twisting), providing enhanced edge grip. Price is due to raw materials and working with caustic etching solution (required for proper bonding).

All you need to do to enter is:
  • Explain why you should design the first-ever pair of EPIC Skis in 300 words or less, images not included
  • Post your entry in this thread before midnight (MST) December 21
  • We'll run a poll to determine the winner which will run until midnight (MST) December 28
  • The winner will be announced December 29

I should get the Epic Skis because I was the first one to post a reply. I believe that the awarding of the skis should be much like the first tracks I would like to make with those skis, the first one there gets the first tracks. Since they are skis and we are all skiers I would like to apply a skiing simile as justification for me winning.

What about length UNDER 186? ;-)

tylrwnzl -- If that's your entry, would you mind putting it in the contest entries thread?

For at_nyc: What about length UNDER 186? ;-)

The topsheet of the skis must be as pictured, the base color must be black, and the length must be 186 cm. or less.

Okay, I'm dense. The press for the ski is already made?
tip and tail design partly determined by the press you already use?
the core thickness and camber shape and edge material and base material are standard to your process already?
Is this a vertical sandwich?
So are we supposed to make up a funny story or design a ski that must be largely designed already? I don't see what this is about?

clarify?

The press is made, and "tweaked" for each design.
tip and tail design partly determined by the press you already use?
Partly....
the core thickness and camber shape and edge material and base material are standard to your process already?
Core thickness is related to skier weight and ski design, camber is adjustable, edges are standard edges used in the industry and the bases will be black due to

  1. Black 4001 material beeing superior to colored 2001 material
  2. I need to place a materials order ASAP to have everything on hand

Is this a vertical sandwich?
Yes
So are we supposed to make up a funny story or design a ski that must be largely designed already? I don't see what this is about?

Responses from me (the builder) in red. I will let nolo step in and clarify what should be in the 300 words, but in short, this is about someone telling a story and winning a pair of semi-custom (everything but the topsheet/base) skis.

do you use any material for dampening the ski? all or tip only

so the story is the key part if the entry. thanks for the info. I'm less dense now

Thanks for asking your questions, davluri, I'm sure they were helpful to others.

Jeezus-K-fer'-freaking Keerhist people, they are giving you a free set of skis for a bit of imagination and it's a fun and neat thing.

What is there to complain about?

Geeeeez, they aren't race skis and I favor sl's and probably wouldn't like a twin tip.  Sooooooo, knowing that some person out there will realllllllllllllllll appreciate them, I wouldn't dream of entering.

This is like entering a contest for a 3 Series Beemer and then whining cause you want a "7".

Foo-on-you ....... shaddup and sketch and make yer' case and be happy or ..... there is probably and indeed there is someone out there who would love these custom skis to death.

Yuki,

These could easily be made into race skis! The contest is for whatever dimnesions the winner chooses, and for just a little bit of cash I can add carbon and Aluminum.

And davluri,

Yes, there is damping included in the skis. I leave the dampening up to you, once you get them on snow

Let me try to explain what I'd be interested in trying.  It has probably been toyed with by others.  I would like a pair of skis that are not symmetrical.  The reason for this is so that I could change the turn radius by swapping the right ski and the left ski.  Make sense?  I'm still old school more than most so it might not matter if adding more weight to the inside ski jeopardizes the purity of the turn carving some.  I do ski two footed, but outside probably gets 70% of the weight.  I would like a pair of skis where the inside edges (a) turn around an r 12 and the outside edges (b) turn around an r 22.  That way, if I felt like taking a high speed run just swap skis.  Too crowded, just swap skis and I am back on a SL.  We could discuss the rest of the details after I am awarded the prize, but I would want them around the 186 cm max, medium to stiff,  and I'm undecided about the tails.

AS a friendly reminder, the Entries in the Contest for the EPIC Skis go in a separate thread.

I would love to write an essay on how great I am in the other thread, but I am unable to get past the 120 photos without my computer freezing 30 times as I scroll to the bottom.
