Going to Tahoe for the 1st time Next Weekend

Visiting some family in California next weekend and will be going to Lake Tahoe for the first time.  I know it's still very early season, but is there a specific resort I should check out that has better snowmaking/pre-season conditions than the other resorts?   Thanks for the info... I've heard Sierra-at-Tahoe or Boreal might be my best bets right now.

You should go nowhere!! You shouldnt go to boreal or sierra because the have no expert.
Why dont you tell us what you are looking for, for instance you are looking for expert terrain, then we will advise you to ignore  granlbakken, boreal, donner.  Tell us you are a low intermediate and money doesnt matter, Heavenly, sierra, homewood, alpine meadows. If you are a expert, squaw has terrain that you will just fall in love with.  Dont go on a holiday or weekend tho!!  Sugarbowl has some good advance terrain (and good snow!) as does kirkwood. Tell us money does matter, Donner will be a good choice as will homewood and sierra.

Heavenly was good last weekend. Best snowmaking and condtions in Tahoe by far. Good storms coming in this week could make the point moot. 5 ft. by next weekend would open it all up.

If you want the best Tahoe skiing go to Heavenly. Ill be up there on Saturday and i would be more than happy to show you around the good spots, if you can keep up ; ). Also if you are staying up there over night, South Lake, where Heavenly is located, has the best night life/restaurants/atmosphere of the region.

But like everyone is saying, we should have at least a few feet by this weekend. So really, anywhere will be good because ur gonna be on powder. Except Boreal, lol, stay away.

If it is storming you may what to look at going to Northstar.  Northstar is more protected from the wind and usually have the whole mtn open when Squaw, Heavenly and Alpine Meadows have their upper mtn closed.

Just an update. Heavenly got 2 feet last nite  with another foot forecasted today !

 


So, anywhere in Tahoe is probably going to be okay when you get there. I'd go myself if i didnt have this dam "job" thing.

Please consider Mount Rose-Ski Tahoe on the east side of Lake Tahoe, up the Mount Rose highway from Incline Village, Nevada, and about 20 minutes from Reno. As of the snowstorm last night, the north side of the mountain opened with 11 single-black runs, 3 blue runs, one of which is a large open bowl, and lots of green for beginners and for practicing your drills, with a fast 6-person chair to the top. But I am prejudiced, since I live nearby.

Consider us nuked then!  woke up to 20 inches of snow at 5100 ft in Washoe Valley, NV.  Heavenly was reporting 30 inches and counting at about 2:30 today

looks like there's plenty more on the way....

great news for folks in tahoe... not so much for visitors who wanted to "see" tahoe.

Thats Right !

Another big 10 inches dropped on South Lake/Heavenly last nite ! I think Tahoe is in adequate shape for the rest of the year.

It's forecasted as 1 degree in SLT tonite.

I'm a big Heavenly fan myself. As for getting there, it couldn't be easier...Fly into Reno and take the shuttle. Get off at Incline Village and you have the north end. Ride all the way to South Lake and you have Heavenly. Mt. Rose is on the way....

Probably the way to go.  Plan on Kookweed as a default, and when weather makes the trip difficult, hit Heavenly.  Maybe a day at Squaw via the Tahoe Queen for kicks.

Sierra at Tahoe is supposedly a good option when you have people who like the park.  They also apparently have some good sidecountry.

If you like slow lifts then Kirkwood is your place to go. We are going to get another 2 feet or so in the next few days. Im trying to get up there Sunday but the storm and winds might close the mountain. Christmas is gonna be awesome though.

NorthStar is my favorite resort in Tahoe and the price is usually right! You will have far less crowds than Heavenly and Squaw. Really depends what side you will be on though.  Also Alpine is much better than squaw in my opinion similar terrain less crowds.
