Oh, and Alta6, I have better pictures of you for your avatar. something a little less, "mug shot"
Go have a run or two for me!
Nah, didn't make it to the Basin till Sunday. Had a few problems in Boulder with Randy's family we had to get straightened out but did manage to ski the afternoon at Eldora. They had really nice conditions with more than half of their terrain open. Felt good taking my first runs of the year. Felt really good.
Sunday found us hitting ABasin after sloppy driving up the canyon from Boulder. Got there around 9:30 where we hooked up with my cousin Rob. Colder than hell and windy. After an hour or so, I sent Randy in as he was starting to look frostbit on his cheeks. He has really low resistance due to Chemo and Radiation for throat Cancer. It was pretty boring skiing with no moguls or trees but managed to ski top to bottom as fast as we could. Downhill mode just cranking out big archs and g-force turns. Cold but fun.
I had talked to Rick the night before in hopes we could hook up for some turns, try some slalom skis out he had set up for me. I looked most of the day in hopes he might be around. Couldn't get any signal on my phone and my battery soon died anyhow. I was really looking forwards to that. But, really didn't see anyone other than ABasin personell giving lessons, or anyone who resembled Weems or Barnes etc. And it was too freakin cold to chase around looking for them.
If anyone was there, I was in red pants, red Marmot jacket and a brown knit hat, Dirtybird Rossi skis and hauling ass cranking big gs turns top to bottom. Looking good of course. Or you may have seen me sitting in the bar sipping bloody mary's in front of the Bronco's game. We left around 3 or so and went to the Condo up in Wildernest. Ended up going into Breck for dinner at Eric's downstairs. Never been to Breck when there was so little snow in town.
Blizzard and high snow warnings for the night got us excited for a powder day the next day, Monday. But it never transpired as the snow was hitting the Southern Mountains. I had a ABasin four pack so we went back and skied a halfday in very frigid conditions and flat light before heading down to boulder for our last night. Party on Garth.
Shitty weather for the drive to DIA and delayed flights caused us to miss our connection in Chicago where we were stranded most of the night before taking a flight into Cleveland and renting a car for a three hour drive in the worst shit i've driven in in years but managed to sleep in my own bed at least.
I've been going to Colorado since 1980 to ski and never have seen less snow than they have now. They're hurting big time and anyone planning a trip before mid January should rethink that. They need major snow.
Rick, missed ya bud. Sorry, it was my screw up and problems with Randy's family. I'll be back in February. We'll ski then.
Weems and Barnes. You missed your big chance to ski with a legend.
