There are discounted tickets loaded on most all Vail Resort passes. In addition pass holders can gain points for various expenditures like paying for lessons / on mountain food / paying for friends tickets. I suspect this is the deal your friend is talking about.
For every 10,000 points someone accumulates they can get a free lift ticket for the day. The pass holders only needs to request a "ticket voucher" from Vail Resorts.
As far as "blackout days", that MAY be a problem from 12/24 or so through 1/1 (check the Vail Resorts Web Site for this years exact dates) and over Martin Luther King weekend.
CW.....be sure to post your dates when you know them...no telling who you may run into !
