Layering for shell pants

post #1 of 7
Thread Starter
Hi all;
I just bought my first pair of shell pants, (insulated up till now). I got Arcteryx Stingray.
Since all I've had to wear under my insulated was a set of long uw, (Damart, Hot Chili), I really don't know what I should be wearing under this shell.
My skiing is all lift-served, East and West. I do ski on some really cold days, especially while in vacation in Colorado, (don't blow off a precious day of vacation just 'cause it's cold!).
What should I wear?
Thanks!!

I have skied in a shell for the past 20 years and prefer it.  The way I do it, 4 levels of insulation.  On real warm days no long underwear.  I have a silk weight, a light weight, medium and expedition - all Patigonia.  Works quite well.

very flat top seam, I will layer with a base wicking pant.

I have light, medium and heavy base layers as well.   I never wear more than one base layer at a time though.  The heavy base is more than enough for even the coldest day.   I have a Stingray Jacket and it is a bit warmer than my other Arcteryx shells and I would guess this applies to the pants as well.   I love my Stingray jacket and bet you will love the new pants.

I have the Stingray pants and jacket and for cold days with the pants I where a tight UA base layer and a slightly over-sized Mountain Hardwear layer (slightly heavier than the UA).  Between the two thermals you'll be warm on even the coldest eastern days.

For the really cold days I wear Polartec 200 fleece pants under my shell pants.  www.sierratradingpost.com usually has them if you can't find them locally.
