Help with all mountain ski choice

Hello all,

This is my first post on this forum. I'm planning on doing quite a bit of skiing this year since I'll have more time over the winter.

A bit about me:

I'm 25 and have been skiing since I've been 4 years old but have only got out about 2 times per year in the past 5 years. I'm looking to up that to at least 10 - 15 days this year. I would rate myself about an 8 and will ski moguls, trees, crud and powder all day if it's available.

I'm 6'1" and probably 160 pounds with gear (yeah, I know....)

I'll primarily be skiing Kimberley, BC with quite a few trips to Fernie as well since they tend to get more snowfall than Kimberley.
Before now I've skiied on some Rossignol Rebel ski's. I didn't mind them, however I'm not totally sure what anything better is like. I'm guessing the waist on those was no more than 70 - 75mm....... and now that I'm in the market for skiis and have done quite a bit of research I would definitely want something wider considering what I like to ski.

Anyhow, I would like some advice on ski's based on my situation..... from what I've researched I'm interested in but am not totally sure. I would also like something a little on the lighter side. At 160 pounds I'm not the strongest person around :)

I've been leaning heavily towards the Fischer Watea 84 based on what I've read in the forum. Also:
Head iM 78 or 82
Volkl AC 30
Rossignol Avenger 82

I also know nothing about bindings or boots but will do some research in the near future. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum:  The Fisher is a good ski but based on where you ski I would have guessed you would look for something a little wider, between 90 & 100 mm waist.  Some great almost do-all boards in that category that will give you a lot better float in the powder then your choices above.  Try looking at the Volkl Mantra (my ski of choice), Line 90 or 100, or one of the K2 lines in that width.  Other skis to look at are found in Ski or Skiing mag gear guides under all mountain or 70/30 big mountain.

As far as binding go, talk to you ski shop, the always have a good suggestion and maybe some deals on last years versions.

Don't forget boots, the most important part of your gear!  If you need new ones find a good boot fitter who listens and know how to fit a boot properly.  Some if not most shops fit ski boots like everyday shoes and whomever buys them are usually unhappy.

Agree w/Bob about the Mantra and P90..  At your size I would look into the Watea 94 as well, more do everything ski than the 84...  Guys around your size seem to Really like the 94..  My brother is about your size and skis the Mantra as his everyday ski, P90 is also a Very fine choice as a do everything ski..

I would agree that your should look at the Watea 94 and not the 84 for where and what you will be skiing.  Mantra is a good ski, but might be a bit beefy for someone who is 160 lbs.  Watea 94 is a great all around western ski that is very light and lively.  It also performs surprisingly well on hard snow for a ski that is 94 in the waist.

Good luck on your search! and welcome to Epic!

Mike

I would try the k2 PE/Extreme.  Only 85mm waist but still good flotation and great on groomers.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I'm going to look at everything that has been reccomended. I think the thing that sets me aside from anyone else looking for an all mountain ski is my weight...

P.S. The Watea 94 graphic for 2009 is hideous, ha.
