UniversalSports Video difficulty - anyone else?

Thread Starter
I am trying to watch today's race, and am finding that the video keeps hanging up. It hangs for a while, and then continues. This is on a Macbook running Firefox and Safari, both using wifi and a direct ethernet. On my PC desktop, I am having the same problem with Firefox, but it is working much better with Internet Explorer. I never had this problem before, but I notice that UniversalSports has changed its video player to Silverlight. Are there compatability problems between Silverlight and Firefox or Safari?

Thanks

Rich

It's not you, I'm getting it, too.  I don't think it's a browser thing, connection issue, or download speed issue.  I think it's a server issue or something else on their end....

Do you have to download Silverlight? Confused. Thanks.

Yes, Silverlight is required now. You can click the plug-ins link in the footer of the Universal Sports web page if you need to install it. The new player has some nice features.

Uhhh....download a piece of MSFT software in order to do something as simple as watch a video on a machine with the best mm framework around. I think not... UniversalSports should try not to be a MSFT tool & instead focus on customers/visitors. Just my .02...

They should just make it easy for people (= us). Really...

Agreed on this, but realize the family lineage of Universal Sports: it's a property of NBC Universal, and another of their networks is MSNBC, which has a direct partnership with Microsoft.  It's not surprising that Silverlight is all over the place on US, given this reality.

Fortunately, the Mac OS version of Silverlight is fairly well coded and works well on most modern Macs.

Is it irksome that US doesn't offer options beyond Silverlight?  Sure, but at least Silverlight has decent quality and control, which Windows Media certainly does not on a Mac (live streaming of WMV with the Flip4Mac architecture is really awkward, whereas Silverlight streams are smooth and feature-equal to the Windows version).
