So true. I'm going to be a bit more blunt though. You've got to be a total bonehead for choosing Japan for a ski trip in April. Japan is all about January. Just like you've got to be a bonehead for choosing Colorado (and many other central resorts) in January. We always get a 1-2 week dry spell in that month. Why roll the dice? Go somewhere where it actually snows when you'll be visiting.
Hmmm. Guess I am a bonehead as well as a crank. I have skied both Colorado and Utah in January many times and always considered it an excellent time to go. Usually had fresh snow. Never had any vacation crowds. Just skied Utah last month with 40+ inches from a 4 day storm. I have no clue about Japan.
Just for the record, east coast skiing only sucks a lot of the time - sometimes it is awesome.
