Good news here though

Appalachian Ski Mtn. Announces Longest Scheduled Season in North Carolina History for 2009-10

Already planning for the upcoming 2009-10 winter season, Appalachian Ski Mtn. has scheduled an unprecedented April 11, 2010 closing date for skiing and snowboarding in North Carolina.

True that it isn't the biggest bump in town, but it is the kind of terrain most of us will be begging for next October.  I will head there either the 27th after our 9am soccer game or Psalm Sunday if I can get out of church that day.  Saturday at noonish is looking like the better of the two.

wow, that's cool.  I can maybe go on the 27th.  I'm out of town on the 21st and then off to Vacouver on the 8th of April, the weekend in between I have nothing scheduled yet!

I'm still shooting for an 09-10 season swan song at Appalachian or Sugar Saturday.  I am probably only going to be there from 1 til about 4pm though.  Let's check conditions Friday and try to hook up if it isn't a total washout everywhere.

Looks like Sugar will be able to accommodate us Saturday (and Sunday for those that can make it then too).  They have listed March 28th at 4:30 pm as their official closing.

Sugar is fading fast.  It looks like the top is now closed.  Might be a coin toss between Appalachian and Sugar if the top half of Sugar is closed Saturday.  Arriving late with parking concerns I'm leaning back towards Appalachian if Sugar isn't open at the top.except for swithcback.  We shall wait and decide Friday night.  Any other Bears committing to be at either location will say that coin toss considerably though.

Let me know if anybody else plans on skiing Saturday afternoon.  Unless it rains I'll leave around 10:30 and be somewhere up there around 1:30 pm.

I am probably going to hit WTG on Saturday, not 100% sure yet.  But the weather looks good and there is plenty of snow left.  If I do make it, I'll have a cooler of beer for tailgating and will head down to Blue Ridge Pig for BBQ in the afternoon.

Saturday morning is looking too cold for 6 year olds to play soccer here (low 30s).  I believe I will do better to skip them game (assuming it isn't postponed) and head up earlier.  That bodes will for semi old school GS skis early and maybe the 90s F17s in the corn after it thaws out around 11 or 12.

I guess end location is fielder's choice.. Sugar looks open on top again but I'll wait and decide Friday night.

MIght do Wintergreen with ya 219 but not sure just yet.

It is sounding like Old Boot and I won't make it out this weekend.  I was thinking of bringing my son and daughter in law up for an afternoon of skiing but we can't quite work out the details and still get everywhere they want to go in their one week visit.  (I think Carowinds, opening day of the coaster, is winning out).

I'll be heading to whistler for a few days skiing so at least I'll get a few more turns in before the season's done, but Old Boot is probably done. ;o(.  Always so sad to see it end.

I'll pass on the beer, but I'll in for skiing.  I'll head North instead of West Saturday early morning if you're going to be at WTG.  Shoot me a PM with your cell and I'll try to be there around 9:30 and give you a buzz when I get there.

I was hoping to get a real update on the conditions and trails before pressing the go button this evening, but may have to just head up and hope for the best.  I called the ski services office, and the guy who answered the phone did not know what trails would be open yet.  He expected the snow report would not be updated until morning.  I am betting minimum of Dobie and Eagle's Swoop, with Sunrise likely as well if there is a way to get over to the top if it (Sunrise holds snow well).  Highlands is a ?? in the late season due to exposure.

The guy said they got a lot of rain overnight into morning (about an inch according to NWS) and that it was too foggy to assess the slopes at the moment.  With overnight temps in the 20s, things should at least consolidate overnight.  Not sure about corn for the morning though, with such wet snow.  It will likely go from frozen granular to wet granular without a corn stage.

Unless I hear something real discouraging about the conditions/trails, I plan to be there ready to ski by 9am and will probably ski until 1 or 2pm.  I park down by the tubing area, right next to Eagle's Swoop, with a backup (in case there is no walking access to the slope) in the lower lot below the ski services building.  Look for the dark blue Acura RDX with ski racks.  I'll be skiing on my Mojo 94s and am rocking a pretty bushy dark ski-bum beard these days.  I'll PM my cell #.

Here's me with my daughter.  I'll be wearing the same jacket, but also sporting full on lent grunge beard.  Driving a gold 09 Forester with an older Thule 21 Ski box up top (the realllllllly long one) and OU front license plate.

We shut down Wintergreen today.  I had a nice, well edited and very descriptive post with comments for every photo then accidentally clicked a link before submitting.  DOH!  I may go back in to edit these later..

But, thanks to Skier 219 and his DCSki friend GLEN(?) for letting me tag along with them today.

Only way to end this thread is to say...  'If you don't (didn't) do it this year you'll be at least one year older when you do".

Good to ski with you Charles, you rock those vintage skis better than most people ski on modern cheater skis.

Don't forget the hissing noise coming from the woods.  Some mysterious carnivore apparently.

BTW, that was "Glenn" (GRK) from DCski.

I only snapped one pic in the morning:

With overnight temps in the low 20s and a high around 45 today, the snow was great.  Excellent day of spring skiing.

IMG_0266.JPGHi Craig and Charles

Great to ski with you guys today.  I mostly lurk here on Epic but I do have an ID.  Pieman here, GRK on DCSki.   Nice conditions early on eh?   That was my swan song for the season.  Hope to hookup next year.

Here is a pic of you guys on the quad:
