I'm still stuck out here until at least Thursday. My cancelled flight today just got cancelled.
I think some of it is possibly at their discretion. It's a hugely complex system, especially when you consider hubs and connections, and how the smallest change can disrupt the whole system. For all we know, they may have some optimizer / decision making software that figures out how to handle issues at the least expense to the airline. I doubt customer well being factors in very highly, if at all.
One reason I hate air travel is that you end up being at the mercy of the system, with very little control over anything. When stuff goes wrong, prepare to be screwed over. Not fun. All the airlines are equal in this regard.
