The 2010 EpicSki Gathering - Page 9

Anybody else taking notice of the material change in storm tracks for the west? This shift should definitely bring improving conditions to the Utah resorts of our collective interest in the near future.
I'll believe it when I see the snow actually fly.  This persistent high pressure ridge has beat off at least 2 storm cycles this month already.  The dog logs are surfacing in the back yard!

Sorry guys I wasnt paying attention to the western weather... all ya had to do was ask.
LET THERE BE SNOW

I gotta say it about weather forecasting in the western mountains. There is an old saying that I heard when I first came to Colorado 16 years ago: The only people forecasting weather are fools and newcomers. So true. The other night the weasther person on Denver 9 News forecasted -2 for Steamboat. As I drove through town the thermometer in my car (which is pretty accurate) read 15. At the mountain it was 19 degrees. So much for forecasting!

I've been looking into demos too.  I found these to have the best selection from what they have provided via email - http://www.utahskigolf.com/products/packageDetails.asp?pID=6&category=2&subcategory=3&size=0&search=&page=
They list Fischer under the Gold Ski Package.
the Canyon Sports cottonwood store sent me this list:

Rossignol: S7,S5,S3,Phantams
K2: Apache Outlaw, Apache Recon, Apache Crossfire
Volkl: AC40, AC30
Salomon: Foil, Gun
Nordica: Top-Fuel, X-wing Fury (their error, unless Nordica just bought Salomon).

I'm looking to demo some skis in the mid-80's range too.  If your BSL is around 304 maybe we can swap for a run.

I am failing at tracking some down.

UL,

Thanks for your consideration.  That'll work out great.  Now all we need are a few good dumps there before we go!
Thanks for the link! I am going to contact them. Btw, my BSL is 325.... so it may be a little work:)

The weather forecast for the next 10 days or so looks promising (knock on wood).  Since I am from NJ where we don't typically get a lot of snow, I have a hard time picturing what 2' - 4' of snow looks like.  I think we need Mr. Crab to post daily pictures of his swingset detailing the snowfall amounts from this storm.

I just want to warn the bears about the whackness of this years snow pack. Wear your beacon if you have one. Its pretty thin base right now so use caution and try to maintain a situational awareness on the hill. Stuff that is usually easily ski able this time of year can really look different with 50" less snow on it. Also I wouldn't be surprised by a canyon road colosure and if gated terrain takes extra time to open if we do get the big dump we are hoping for.

dear tromano,

since we have two weeks before we are all out there together how about you head to the hills and take about 80 runs per day to ensure the new snow is packed and makes a firm base.  on those windy days probably you will need to do double, or just fully side-step down the cornices for us.  you're a good man, and we appreciate your hard work!

thanks,
k

Heh, Interesting request. Are you coming to UT to ski moguls? If so this is your year
post #253 of 556
I am on the skier compaction detail, at least at Snowbasin.  BTW, it is snowing this morning with more forecast throughout the week.

Tromano is right about the weak & fragile snowpack in the Wasatch, but this is more of a concern out of the ski area boundaries.  I probably won't do much adventuring till March, depending how things shape up.  Ski area runs will be controlled & open only when deemed safe.  If we begin recieving huge dumps of snow, I would certainly recommend caution & awareness of your surroundings even in bounds.

Good luck with it.

Michael.....bummer.  I have cut my normal season in half this year due to work, so I hear ya there.  Too bad we won't get out on the hill this season together.

Just got back from the Doctor, The verdict is in !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stress Fracture of the 2nd Metatarsal. No running, or BBall for 6-8 weeks.

So one little question Doc, I have this trip planned to UT in 2 weeks,"Oh so your a skier" he says. Well you need to let your foot heel before any activity that requires you to move your foot in an UNSTABLE position, If you have a shoe with a thick sole and good support something like a hiking boot will help your fracture heal correctly. As far as Skiing I would say ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A ski boot would be the perfect solution for your foot,  No flex in the sole and snug fit around the top of your foot is better than any fracture boot we have in our office.
As long as you take it easy by staying away from cliffs and T. parks I think you will be fine to continue with your plans!

A fellow skier himself, He also mentioned that there seemed to be a pattern shift that would help my foot by providing a softer base to ski on. Looks like better conditions are coming over the next few weeks.

Thanks for understanding my passion and understanding how a ski boot fit Doc!
It's official.... the giant big blue 'H' has finally taken a sabatical from it's Utah/Colorado weather map location. I thought that damn High would never get the boot!

B- Congratulations on the green light to ski... now the hard part will be actually taking it easy vs. just telling yourself to take it easy once your clicked in. I usually fail.

Contgrats on the great news!  I like the fact that he limited "taking it easy" to avoiding Cliffs and T. parks.

I know snow has been week in Utah, but I would like to offer some promise for a great up and coming week.  My wife and I just came back from a three day ski stent in Ogden.  We skied twice ant snowbasin and once at powder mountain.  As much as it was not the utah fluff we know and love, almost all runs were open, and nothing a little p-tex can't fix.  I will try to post a trip report in a couple of days.  With this being said...

B - Glad you're OK to ski - cool doctor!!  In the 'more good news' dept:

'Bird reports 18" in the last 48 hrs., plus THIS synopsis for the remainder of the week(off the SLC NOAA site):

"Tonight another medium-to-heavy density snowfall expected - 6-11" expected overnight from 9pm MST thru Wed 2pm MST.

Remarks:
Another fast moving wave will ramp snow back up Thursday night bringing an additional 3 to 6 inches of snow. Significant snowfall expected to develop Friday...peak Saturday....and taper Saturday Night. An additional 1 to 2 feet of snowfall is expected during that time...but densities will be falling drastically as cold air floods in from the WNW."

If they get all that they're predicting, Snowbird's season total will approach the 200" mark by the end of this week.  At least it's a start...

Snowbasin had about 10" fresh snow today.  More on the way!

If anything, I dig the progression from high density stuff underneath first followed by a round of the fluffy.

I'm taking a leap.  Didn't make a gathering last year, and I'm feeling kind of left out.

See you there...or not depending on how hard it snows.

That's the tonic right now - a good layer of heavies to paste the remaining rocks and collapse all the pockets(if there are any left) and hopefully somehow wipe out that deep layer of faceted near the ground that wants to rear its ugly head again, followed by progressively drier layers to float on/in.  If this keeps up, I may need to visit a place that can set me up with something wider than what I've got to ski with these days!!  Of course, copious pow has never stopped me in the past on those sticks, but I'm sure that it's alot more work than it should be!
we better ski past 1 or 2pm daily ... have to work off lunch!!

glad to hear the doctor high-fived the skiing ... I don't think any bears are part of the park crowd ... but cliffs ... hmm, do cornices count???

got word from a friend in UT about great snow at snowbird yesterday.  hurray!
The web site at Alta had listed 110" in the last 24 hours, but it has since been changed to 10".  More snow on the way.  I thought they were pulling a Killington move and slightly exaggerating the snowfall totals

I think his message was not to have a sudden weight distribution, from a drop onto the L foot.
But, if there happened to be say 12"-36" of fresh to land into, then Cornices would get the green light.

Due to Circumstances beyond my control I will not be able to attend the Gathering on Snowbasin Day.  Don't worry about me though,  I will be in Mammoth for Superbowl Weekend and will be skiing with a bunch of old High School Buddies - can't turn down the free lodging!
I'm sure that you all will be in good hands with 4ster.  Enjoy and I will see you all next time!
