I have been on a pretty good routine this past summer -- not for skiing, but all-around fittness. Probbaly the best shape I have been in in a while since I started using a personal trainer starting last fall. Usually by Septemer I am looking into ramping up my exercise routine for the coming ski season but this time I am approaching the season already in full swing. I don't race but definately find being that being in decent shape helps a lot, especially at the beginning of the season. You won't tire as easy and you can stay out longer without having to ramp it down. Also, being in decent shape should help with injury prevention, even for the average joe q skier who just hits the slopes a few times a season.
