Skiing Magazine releases 2010 Resort Rankings

Thread Starter
2010 Resort Rankings http://bit.ly/1eBWY I agree with these more than SKI's that seem heavy on factors beyond actual skiing
post #2 of 33
I was a bit surprised there was no East Coast resort in Best Overall, usually there's at least 1, if just for PC.

The rest of the lists were pretty much as you would expect. Personally, I've always felt any of the rankings in the top 10 were pretty much interchangable depending on personal prefrence.

The first list is pretty in-tune with conventional wisdom about places that are good for steeps, snowfall, etc. I see they gave mention to one of your top chairlifts;  KT-22 at Squaw.
I liked the second list, best of the rest, because it told me about some stuff I didn't know like making a good alcoholic drink out of maple syrup & lemonade, and cheap places to stay near good skiing

I enjoyed some of the later categories you had to drill down to see.  Lets have a debate about the "Most Condescending Locals" category...

That was kind of covered here (said in a condescending tone, if that helps):

Anyone else recognize the most condescending local?  That's pretty funny J!

Honorable mention Buck Hill?  Are they serious?   Great racing team, and solid snowmaking infrastructure, but that's about it folks.  It is flatter than flat and that ain't flattering.   Still, I still wish I had a Buck Hill in my town, better than nothing ya know...  But, it hardly compares to anything else listed here.

Thanks.  I feel suitably dissed.

Wow--still have to take these with a good dose of salt. It still sounds like a popularity contest to me--large, destination resorts and ski areas near large population centers seem to enjoy a big advantage in these "rankings."

While there's no doubt, for example, that Arapahoe Basin and Aspen have some great steeps, I cannot see ranking them above Big Sky in that category.

Oh well...good to get the juices flowing for the new season. The best mountain is still the one you're skiing at the moment!

Best regards,
Bob Barnes

Hard to read on their site, but I feel privileged to be ignored.

Oh, no!  Mt. Baker made it for shortest lift lines.  Don't believe it!  They say that there are no lines, but I stood in line once for almost 5 minutes last season.

Under the radar is such a fine place to fly.  Lived in a town that got best 10 list in a major magazine, dang near ruined the place.

Now you won't be so lonesome up there.  Somebody else can help you track up the goods.

Well, the good news is that Baker, like the rest of the PNW, has a bit of protection by virtue of location. When the closest semi-practical lodging is 20 minutes away and available services hover at just about zero by resort standards, you do not exactly get throngs of vacationers.

And the fact that all the western WA Cascade areas suck & have heavy nasty terrible snow...
The lift lines at Baker were non-existent in the 80's and 90's. Now they're non-existent on crappy days. On powder days, the lines can get ugly...although it's a rare day when you get powder after the first run anymore anyhow. Any more it's all about how bad is the line climbing the arm.

Yeah, and the best part is the thread cited doesn't really cover what I said it did.

These rankings are better than the SKI rankings. They put snowbird and alta at like 26. Just because theres no spa for all the softies to lay around at. Skiing knows what hardcore real skiers want
post #20 of 33
I'm sorry, but RMR in the top 10 overall?  It may not even make it through the winter?
What the hardcore real skiers want is not to see all the Skiing Magazine readers booking ski trips to their neighborhood.
Hey, first post over here.  Not too worried about RMR going under.  Lots of construction going on at the base of the mountain right now with about 100 workers finishing the second building of Nelsen Lodge for this season as well as the services and road construction for the second neighbourhood going in before snowfall.  They have sold another 8 condos in the lodge since spring and are planning construction to start on the golf course next spring.  Nothing new on the mountain this winter, but the owners are trying to build the infrastructure to make the area a four season resort.

I think it switched places with fernie as the BC hill that they want to hype.

I hope the best for RMR, but they have a tough row to hoe.  But for Skiing to say a  remote,  two year old resort without much infrastructure, very few hotels or restaurant's and barely any base area is #5 and then not even include a place like Squaw Valley in the top ten? That's stupid.

It isn't stupid if that's what you're looking for.  Here's a place with legendary terrain, size, vertical, and snow that has few people and no glitz.  It's difficult to get to so only dedicated skiers will be going there, at least for now.  Now why wouldn't it be in the top 10?  I would much rather go there than Whistlerland or any other big mega resort.  I have no opinion on Squaw Valley since I've never been there to ski, but Revelstoke looks just like the sort of place I would find superior.

True last year.  This year Alta came in first for "overall satisfaction" in the Ski survey : http://www.skinet.com/ski/resorts/2009/09/top-10-lists-reader-resort-survey

Alta is a great place. If your going to Utah its a mandatory you go there for at least a day. Does anyone have an opinion about my ski vacation this year. I think its gonna be in cal. Mammoth or Tahoe? I like pow, hate lift lines, and wanna ski all blacks and some double blacks

IMO it depends when you're going, & for how long.  If your trip is in April or May Mammoth is a no brainer, but can be crowded other times.  In Tahoe you'll find good steeps & bumps at Squaw, Alpine, Sugar Bowl, Kirkwood & even Heavenly if there is much snow.  Mount Rose also has some good steeps when avalanche control is done.
