Volkl AC 30 Unlimited (08/09) vs Salomon XW Tornado

I've been lucky enough to bump into both the Volkl AC 30 Unlimited and the Salomon XW Tornado for very cheap locally. I was looking for an everyday carver, but something I could take into the tight East coast trees and be nimble.

About Me: I've got the college beer belly 5'10 230lb, but from biking and crew my legs are very strong. Still, I hear the you really have to stay on the AC30 or get tossed in the back seat, yet its more stable then the Tornado when ripping the groomers. I hear the Tornado shine because they are easy to ski, yet when you give them input they respond very well and would be quicker in the tree's then the volkl. Underfoot the Volkl is 76 while the tornado is 75. Both have integrated bindings.

I was looking at the AC30 in 177 and the Tornado in a 178.

The guy who has them is leaving for Tahoe and won't be using them anymore...but he's leaving soon. Advice would be great.

Cheers

That is already a pretty good synopsis. You don't need any more info/opinions.

You just need to apply your own priorities and make a decision.

Thanks SJ,
Got a different PM coming to you for boot help. I was leaning towards the volkls for the longest time til a friend suggested the tornado.  I just want it to be winter!

At 230 lbs, I would say the AC30 just because you're gonna the extra stiffness.

I didn't notice them to be stiff. They have a pretty soft shovel for easy turn initiation. I tend to ski a little back anyways, that really helped me.

If you are talking about the the current version of the AC30 with the wide ride Marker Motion binding system with IPT and not the first version of this ski, I say buy it. I have the 09/10 version (I believe it is the same as the 08/09) and absolutely love this ski! Mine is a 170 and I am 5'9" 195lbs and an agressive 8/9 skier.

Good luck,

From my experience riding the AC30 and AC50...I like the AC50 much better. Kevlar/stiffer board...I really enjoyed that ski.  Especially for your size.

Just in case the last three posts were directed to the OP......his last question on the subject was 16 months ago. I S'pect he's already made his decision.
