Heh, if Golf makes it into the Olympics, will that be considered a 5th major every 4th year?  What format would they use, Stroke Play? Modified Stapleton? Match Play?

From what I've read, the plan is 72 hole stroke play.  Golf and Rugby are being considered.  When asked if he'd like to compete in the Olympics, Tiger said he'd love to compete in Rugby.  He then went on to say he really would like to play golf in the Olympics.  There's no question that winning Olympic Gold would be a thrill for him or anyone.    I had aspirations of competing at Mexico City in 1968 in gymnastics but a war came along ....

Please. No golf in the Olympics. Doesn't it already get enough attention? There are already enough sports that are ignored. If they add golf, we'll see nothing but golf, swimming, and maybe a little track.

Why not?  Golf may not have the long traditions and wide following of team handball, but you have to try new things.

Golf is a world game, and most cities that would host the Olympics already have a course that could function, or build a new course (a great way to use some actually toxic wasteland and clean up the neighborhood.  It would not require nearly the reorganization of systems as baseball or basketball did.

Would not be any more professionally oriented than the above or tennis, it could be as pure as skiing.  Like skiing amatures can compete on the same course, like skiing they just won't be competitive.  Men's and women's competition could easily be established at the same time so no ski jumping problems.

If memory serves golf at least has a history of having been an Olympic sport in the past.  Bring it back.

The recommendation for golf recently made it out of IOC committee. That's what made the news last week.

BTW - this is business as usual. Every Olympics considers new sports to be added. There's a whole rigmarole sports go through to get considered and approved (e.g. worldwide participation rates, competitive sanctioning orgs) and there's the exceptions that allow things such as ribbon dancing in.
