The "not inspiring" thing may be more about a feel you're looking for from a ski. If that's the case, then I'm guessing that the unisex counterpart to that would be equally uninspiring. YMMV.
I've demoed women's skis with similar sidecuts and similar descriptions and got a completely different "feel" from them. Some lively and snappy, some damp and calm, some powerful, and some that could be described no other way than uninspirational.
The point is, women's skis have come a long way from the shrink it and pink it days. They are no longer a limiting version of the unisex skis, but instead a whole different ski line that offers up skis for every woman, from the beginner to the casual day tripper to the demanding woman who's planning a heli trip.

How about Volkls? You might want to check out the Aurora. Has great ice hold, yet wide enough for a variety of conditions. Similarly, the Nordica Conquers might be a good choice. And Fischer has a new line called the Koas -- these replace the Vision line and come in a variety of widths. Any of these: Volkl, Nordica, or Fischer -- would be great in the east.
This is a good selection!
I have not skied the Aurora, but I've always been a volkl fan, liking the energy of that line. I can only imagine that the Aurora is lively and fun with that edge grip that an east coaster wants.
