Those amazing Japanese scientists apparently have created a Cylon skier. Luckily it has no arms to hold ski poles or other sharp pointy things. Apparently the "art" of skiing does not involve any arm balance or pole touches. For that matter no head either.
Quote From TFA: :
Although the researchers tried to model a real skier as closely as possible, they faced several challenges. Their robot consisted of two legs attached to skis, with a large “waist” that contained the computer and battery. They had to modify certain values, such as the ratio of the robot’s center of mass to its ski separation distance; a version of the robot with the correct human ratio was very prone to falling over.
Hmm, even as a lowly Level-1 instructor I can usually cure even Texans of that within 1/2 hour. Maybe EpicSki should offer consults (for a fee of course, or at least some cool robot swag!)
Being talked about on Slashdot. I wish I had mod points today to mod this particular comment up:
They had originally built a snowboarding robot, but it was too busy smoking pot for them to do any actual research.
Apparently the Japanese did not know that EpicSki already had a skiing robot: PSIAMan
Maybe they should add Bob Barnes to their team!
