Of course, then you end up on United......

Just because I live in a ski town doesn't mean I don't want to travel to see other places... sure I live in a great place, but there are many other great places to see.  I probably only fly about 3 times a year, but if I lived closer to a major airport I'd probably travel much more... I've lived here 7 years, and in that time I've only used the local airport twice out of the 20 or so times I've flown simply because the cost was too much to justify.  It doesn't mean I'd trade living here for living closer to a city because the ability to travel often is something I'm willing to sacrifice.. .but for some people who love to travel and plan on travelling a lot when they retire, it's a big factor to consider.

If my wife would go for it we would be living in Bend, OR. A new Boulder if you will.

Great skiing, seasons, weather, rivers, fishing, climbing, schools, kids sports, beers, PCT, etc. Bachelor has a good attitude to me. Cool downtown.

For now near Boone, NC will have to do. Not too bad for our part of the world I guess.

Peace Out.

Tried it found it boring...would rather fish at least then I'll have something to eat.  In fairness to surfing it is very hard to learn and I wasn't very good but also didn't see any point in trying to get better as I didn't really enjoy it....I feel exactly the same way about golf.

I'm kind of impressed here - I've never seen golf and surfing linked like that.  You have a rare perspective IME.

Bored with the beach? He is doing it wrong. I almost never go to the beach to just "sit" at the beach. There has to be a fun activity involved. Like windsurfing, kitesurfing, surfing, kayaking, snorkeling, etc. Some of these are too hard to learn on a vacation, but if you live there, you've got the time. Of course, it depends on what beach you're talking about.

I had some friends who did this in St. George, Utah.  High desert.  Able to play golf year round.  Close to Bryan Head and not too far to SLC or Vegas.  Also relatively affordable compared to a lot of "ski towns".

As of the end of September, Michigan will be removed from my profile.  Over the past few years we've looked at Bellingham, Bend, Flagstaff, Fort Collins, and a few other places.  In the last week of this month we'll be heading "home" to Sandpoint.  Here's a view from our deck at our new home, during the day and at dusk, just off Schweitzer Mountain Road 8 miles from Schweitzer.

Something tells me you don't own a surfboard, body board, or surf poles.
What are surf poles?  I'm picturing ski poles and wondering what one would do in the surf with them, so obviously I am missing something.  Just call me a landlubber....

Thanks TheDad, I'm sure Michigan takes no offense.  It's been pretty good to me for over the past 35 years, but it knows it is just too flat for my soul.

How are you going to deal with all the Nazis?

Just kidding.  Very nearly moved there myself a few times.

The best physical therapist in Idaho is your neighbor, a close neighbor based on the view.  PM me for the contact if you need one.

Congrats, and welcome to the great American West!

Thanks 4ster.  I still hope to spend time in the Wasatch every year and hope to see you there - or - come on up for a visit!

Put up an Israeli flag of course

I will PM you.  There's just about no chance that I won't have need for a good PT.

You might remember that we looked at Bend as well and got some advice from you.  Sandpoint just seemed like a better fit but we'll find out very soon.

The only problem I see in your logic is that us who have lived here in Park City for 40 years are being overrun by you who have invaded what was a nice quiet little town and turned it into a small LA where home prices are in the millions and we are forced to deal with jack asses on a daily basis.  Not that that will sway your desision at all, as we all know, the space is just getting ruined because of rich overpopulation.  This is OUR town and enough is enough.

Similar remarks could be made by long-timers at almost any real ski town.

Could be said about any ski town.  Face it, the internet has made it easier and easier to work from home.  Presumably at some point, unless you're Anasazi, your ancestors showed up and "ruined things".

Realizing you're new here, I'll mention this gently.  You realize that this thread is almost three years old and that Si, who I assume you're directing your comment to, has lived in Sandpoint for nearly three years now, right?  Add to that, Si never seems to visit this website anymore so likely will never see your comment, anyway.  Having said that, welcome to EpicSki!

We picked Bend.  I don't think anyone has more snow or a longer ski season (We had 3000' of vertical open last weekend, 22 miles from town).

Here's something to think about--the weather in town.

Average annual precipitation:

Park City 43 inches

Whitefish 21 inches

Jackson 16 inches

Bend 12 inches.

Newfy, annual precipitation could be snow, could be rain.  I'm pretty sure if it was all in the form of rain, we'd pick Bend, but with your numbers if it was mostly in the form of SNOW, the pick would be Park City.  And who cares what it does in town anyway if what counts is what happens on the mountain?  I'm not saying Whitefish beats you in either case, but stats about the town unless it was school systems or crime or real estate prices just don't seem relevant.

Not sure where you got those numbers, but PC's seems off. It's a pretty dry area, and I see a few sources list annual precip at about half that (21 inches or so). NOAA has SLC (doesn't seem to have the info for PC) at around 16" average over 30 years.

Well, it is fact that Mt. Baker gets the most snow.  We could have a longer ski season as well, but they choose not to run the lifts later than the end of April: however, you can hike for turns year round.

We also have the inland waters of the Salish Sea to float around in and mountains and forests in every direction for hiking, etc. while we wait for new snow.

Wow, Bellingham has 34.84" of annual precipitation, significantly less than Park City. Whoda thunk?

Well, unfortunately I spend more time in town than on the mountain, so I think it is pretty important.

We have a 12 month mountain bike season here.

Easy choice in the USA is park city. Lots of good stuff equal to almost any other ski town in almost every way with SLC as the tie breaker. I went a different way due to family and friends but for my money it's clearly PC.

Clearly we are too busy shoveling to be riding our bikes.  And you are 600 feet higher than us!!!  (Can these numbers be right??)
