Bode & Kristi Make Final Four

Are you, like me, among the 3.8 million viewers of last week's The Superstars, an "athletic" competition featuring teams pairing sports and entertainment celebrities? If so, you know that free skier and X-Games competitor Kristi Leskinen and World Cup champion Bode Miller are among the four remaining teams in the competition, the other two teams are headlined by WNBA diva Lisa Leslie and US soccer champion Brandi Chastain. Bode won this competition in 2002, becoming the second skier to win after Hermann Maier in 2001. He won't win this year unless he and his partner Paige Hemmis kick up the intensity to match Leskinen and Chastain, who are my bets for the final.

The show airs Tuesdays at 7 p.m. my time. Here's a story from the Ski Channel for ya, RR.

It's on around 7 PM MT.  It's easily skippable.  One of the lamer reality competitions.  We had a jog and bowling this last time.

It is kind of silly, but having skiers in the lineup was all it took to hook me!

Oh, that's why I watch it, but once they've gone, I flip to a home show or Deadliest Catch.  This show is positively painful to watch.

It's too bad because with a few tweaks I think the series would be a lot of fun for both participants and audience. Quit the practice of sending a team home each week with the obstacle course elimination--that's inane. Make it a week-by-week progression toward the crown. Make the competition more of a test of athleticism so winning means something.

Speaking of which, I never picked up on what they win--other than (questionable) bragging rights. Anyone know?

I watched it in the 70s when it came on Sundays after Wide World of Sports. They had some cool match ups.  They would do the World Series Champs versus the Superbowl Champs for example.  I used to take note of the lackluster performance of retired folks that shouldn't have showed up.  I remember seeing Joe Frazier unable to military press 145 pounds. Something was wrong with me because I thought that was funny, when now I realize it is just plain sad.
How did it turn out, is it over yet?

Bode and Kristi made it to the final next week, along with Lisa Leslie, whose "heart of a champion" has been on display week after week as she and her teammate seem to always be in the bottom two teams, one of which is eliminated.

The events last night involved "watercraft" (missed that segment while I was walking the dog, but it looked like they were paddling surfboards...), archery, and a climbing wall relay. Bode and Kristi seem to be in the best shape of all the competitors--maybe it's all the cross training that they do, or maybe it's just that they got to have a wide range of athletic experiences before specializing in skiing, which seems not to be the case with people who grow up to play, say, pro basketball. (Growing up in the inner city tends not to develop the ability to sail, swim, kayak, etc.)

It's at least as entertaining as whatever else is on at 7 p.m. on a Tuesday...
