i've worn out a couple of ATACs but believe they are durable. Lasted much longer than the Shimano XT, but those were from when Shimano XT was the only clipless mtb pedal. Back then, the release on Shimanos became more difficult when the cleat was worn down, I got stuck in one and hurt myself a little. New Shimanos might be different, though they look the same to a casual observer (me). I've only used the original model.
ATACs release easily, I disagree that any experienced rider will not come out when they want to without thinking about it. To anyone setting up Time pedals, I would suggest setting the cleats in the position that increases retention and decreases inadvertent release.
Currently I have studded platform pedals on my mtb, also 1.5" slicks and a frozen suspension fork, but that set-up is not for everyone.
