DVR Alert- "Ski School" Alert- HBO this week
Before you watch it make sure it is 4:20 because the movie simply sucks without it, after 4:20 it is like Citizien Kane. This is one of my guilty pleasures. Dean Cameron and Stuart Fratkin make a great comedy duo. They had a short-lived series that aired only in NY, LA and Philadelphia back in the day called They Came From Outerspace.
Anyway, yes the movie is bad and very Canadian but did you know that Dean, Stuart and Patrick Lab... improvised much of the stuff and even wrote many of the scenes (Godzira, Who's Underwear is it, Subliminal Hypnosis)
The skiing is pretty cool and the fashions totally capture the late 80s early 90s neon vibe.
Put that in your pipe and smoke it!
Of course the wife won't let me hang this poster up in the house anymore.

I watched it last night! I forgot just how bad it was. I enjoyed parts of it anyway. For the record, my experiences living in a resort town for the last 19 years and working for the ski school for the last 3 seasons are in no way similar to anything I ever saw in any ski movie.
It's been on in the last couple months and I watched the first time I saw it on curious if it had improved over the years . It hadn't but the gear sure has changed and that was cool . Also trying to identify the skiers not in close ups actually doing the skiing keeps your interest somewhat.
What I don't understand is why I watched it again just last week. Subliminal messages or does it soothe the soul in the non skiing summer doldrums ?
It sucks but I still like it. Is there a thread about that ?
Ski School is in my top three of Hollywood released ski films (Hot Dog, Aspen Extreme, Ski School). There I said it.
Ski Patrol was bottom of the barrel. The best part was the Rodney Dangerfield impressions. T.K. Carter, come on, I loved you in The Thing, Southern Comfort, heck even Saved By the Bell, but a Ski Patroler? There were some OK late 80s racing pant fashions working in this movie I must admit.
Its funny seeing who the ski sponsors are in these movies because every actor is sporting the stuff. Ski School is especially bad with the Dynastar and Gordini product placement. The 'evil' ski instructor was rocking those crazy Spyder race pants though.
Ski Bums however is a great ski documentary. Crucial Mike and Johnny Thrash are hilarious. Crucial Mike's tips for getting free food at the cafeteria is priceless. I think it is on Netflix so people should check it out.
I have all those except ski school. I'll keep an eye out on the movie channels I get and snag it when it snows on Encore or TMC, don't currently get HBO or Cinemax. Can't get our $'s worth out of the extra movie channels with little kids around.
Here's one I just scored a DVD of that you'll appreciate. Tonight I'll be watching my new DVD copy of..
Dogtown and Z-Boyz

Ski School DVD
Damn, and I was all like "Mmmmmmm... Blue with white polka dots... " It must be rough getting old!
Sorry but this may be a bit of a thread hijack.
Finn, that Ski School Poster isn't the only one collecting dust in the basement. Here are a few more.
A little Hot Dog for you.
How about a lobby card of Sylvia?
And lastly a tapestry from the 1984 World Cup in Aspen. This is my most prized skiing souvenir, relegated to the basement. But come on, where am I going to hang it? I was even denied by my family to hang it in the house...in Aspen! So now it sits in a basement in PA. Sad.
My copy of Ski School 1 came yesterdya. I hadn't seen it in a very long time. Watching it this time really reminded me of PCU with Section 8 being "The Pitt" and section 1 being David Spade's Frat.
There are some pretty blatant Animal House ripoffs. Section 8 are the Deltas, 1st section is Omega. The snowball scene is a direct ripoff of the food fight scene, etc. You can pretty much tell all the scenes the actors made up themselves because they deviate from the Animal House plot.
I forgot about one more that was hiding. How about a little Aspen Extreme?
Do you know who has the perfect room for these posters? Yup, Phil. His man-cave is the biggest I have ever seen.
Best snowball fights:
1) Dumb and Dumber
2) Hot Dog
3) Ski School
